In Keith Richards book, Life, he gives Bobby Goldsboro credit for showing him how to play the guitar in open chords. Richards was an astute student because not long afterwards came a string of Stones songs using open G. Jimmie Rogers (Honeycomb, Kisses Sweeter than Wine) was also a proponent of the open G.
