WASHINGTON (ABC7) — A U.S. Park Police officer shot himself in the foot Thursday after being attacked by a raccoon in Northwest D.C., according to officials.
Police say the officer was trying to get the raccoon off him when he shot himself. The officer was taken to the hospital and police say the injuries are not life-threatening.
ABC7's Q McCray reports neighbors say they heard nine gunshots and that the officer was flown to the hospital.

I think they finally removed the raccoon when he went to the hospital for the wound to his foot.

Yeah I started deer hunting a few years ago. I’ve done very well but have chosen not to the deer to butcher because of cwd fears. I just figure the processing equipment is more likely to be contaminated with the bulk that goes through.
Nine shots and only hit himself once. That’s pretty good, isn’t it?
I’ve never hunted, but I did recently buy some books for reference about hunting and butchering. One can never be too prepared.
I want to know how the coon got on him....It doesn’t say but if that ringtailed rat was rabid, he’d find a way and FAST. They are mean as spit on a hot giddle, but sick they’ll come looking for you.
Wouldn’t you get exposed just by cleaning the thing if it were rabid?..yes, Cut while gutting it or open sores are routes of infection.
Don’t cut into the spine or brain. It’s where the prions are concentrated.
No known CWD where I hunt, but no sense taking chances. .
Did he used to work for the DEA? There was an idiot there who shot himself in the foot while talking to schoolkids.
Husband was riding bike when rabid racoon jumped out of brush & chased him. Husband said its growl sounded like a bear. LOL! Husband never pedaled so hard & fast in his life.

LOL! I don’t blame him in the least, raccoons are nasty animals and can be ill tempered when not rabid.
We live in the city limits but the property that backs up to us is about 3/4 of an acre and the back half of that is unkempt jungle. Every year we see raccoons on the fence and in our yard at times.
I tell the grandkids to give them a wide berth and not to mess with them.
He needs to change his clothes cologne.
Yeah don’t let the cute, cuddly pictures fool you. They can be vicious. I had one kill 10 of my chickens in one night. I have to set out traps every other night just to keep my animals safe. Mean, vicious little rascals.
