My guess is the NYPD Special Victims and IT units. They would have initially examined Weiner’s and Abedin’s devices which had been subpoened by a Manhattan grand jury. From there it is an easy jump to the newsroom of thde city dailies. NYC is still, even in this age, a newspaper town. A cop is far more likely to leak to a daily than he ever would to electronic media. Newsday survives on Long Island by receiving info from the PDs, DAs, courts, town and village officials who know something or have an axe to grind. In NYC the print reporters have far more daily connection and access to the working grunts who know stuff than their more highly paid and better coiffed TV colleagues. And every so often even the Times has an attack of journalism, though in this case I think it was to get ahead of the story because they knew what the Post was going to do with it.
