Atheists Fight to Remove ‘God’ From AA Program
Breitbart ^ | October 25, 2016 | Thomas D. Williams

A Canadian man is suing Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) to have “God” removed from its famous Twelve Step program, alleging discrimination against atheists, agnostics, and freethinkers. First published in 1939, the “Twelve Steps” of Alcoholics Anonymous have a significant spiritual component, and six of the twelve make direct reference to God or a “higher power.” Those following the program must acknowledge their powerlessness over alcohol and their dependence upon God to restore them to health.

To be honest, I’m surprised the deity word is still even there. Nothing is stopping the Pagans from forming their own organizations, vs trying to piggyback off the success and history of the AA.

If it’s not the God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob, the God found in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, it’s a false god anyway.

It’s not a government program, it’s private. Don’t like it? Deal with it.

I have a close friend who was sentenced to 52 weeks of AA meetings by a Judge in California. His crime was blowing a .02% (1/4 of the current limit).

He was not enjoying attending at all, was not interested in quitting drinking. After about three weeks of saying nothing he was asked to speak by the leader.

He went into a monologue about how much he enjoyed drinking, what he was planning on having when he returned, home, what brand of gin made the best gin and tonics, etc.

After the meeting the leader came over and told him that he was not very funny, that people were trying to get their lives together, etc.

He handed her his "book" that she was supposed to sign off on his attendance and she signed off the remaining 49 weeks there and then, and asked him not to come back.

I always found this amusing.

He is not forced to attend any more then he is forced to go to church.

You don't like it, pick another program.

AA went to court to prevent judges from ordering people to attend AA meetings. Their point, and it is a logical one, is that the program is for people who want to be there and someone who attends only because they are ordered to defeats the purpose and may cause harm to other members.

“Or fight to remove AA as a court mandated punishment.”

That’s been so abused it is virtually useless.

They just sign their own sheets with different names and don’t bother with meetings.

Instead of forming his own 12-step group with their own version of the 12-steps the thug wants AA to change.

Same as gay marriage. You can not create anything - a movement, an institution, a cultural practice, etc... without an ethos. And once you have that ethos, it won't stand the test of time unless it conforms to Natural Law. Without it, you will fail every time.

So they simply try to take-over and pervert those that exist. Exactly like parasites moving into a host. And like a parasite, they will eventually kill the host.

I fully agree with you and others, who made this point. AA is a private organization, which is run by their members as they see fit. It is not a unit of government. As such, issues of freedom from religion, or separation of church and state, simply don’t apply here.

And others made the point, of why don’t these atheistic types start their own organizations, if existing organizations offend them so much??

Form an alcohol group for atheists/anarchists/non believers of all stripes. If they feel so strongly, yet still want help kicking their alcohol demons, form their own groups which will omit reference to God. They have every right to form such groups. Go ahead and do it.

AA is not a state-run program. Good luck with that. It’s that whole “freedom of association” thingy.

Its Canada. The maggots have dined even longer on their society than they have the USA's. Don't be surprised what the Government or courts there will allow.

Or fight to remove AA as a court mandated punishment. They’re good with either one. And given that AA’s success rate is no better than any other treatment program it really shouldn’t be the one you get sent to when the courts decide you have a problem. If we’re going to have court mandated treatment it needs to either be one with a high rate of success, or opened to any treatment program.

Yeah, as someone who was court-ordered into treatment, and required to go to AA, I definitely know the value of it. But, as you say, there should be choices besides AA.

That’s what I was thinking. They could call it AAA - AA for Atheists.

They could offer free towing with a membership.
