Chicago Cubs won tonight played the Los Angeles Dodgers and won. On to the World Series!
Boudreau was born in Harvey, Illinois and attended Thornton High School. He died at age 84 in Olympia Fields, Illinois where he is buried.
He and his wife had 4 children, a daughter married Denny McClain, star Detroit Tiger pitcher.
He invented the "Boudreau Infield Shift" to counteract slugger Ted Williams, a dead-pull hitter. He later said the "shift" was more psychological than tactical against the "Splendid Splinter". But it set the baseball world a-twitter at the time!
In his career he managed the Cleveland Indians, the Boston Red Sox, the Kansas City Athletics and the Chicago Cubs. He ended up doing broadcasting and color for the Cubs games.
I grew up in Wrigley Field. From the western Chicago suburb where I lived, it was 10 cents on the El with a free transfer onto the Western Ave. streetcar which took me right to the stadium.
I saw all the National League greats during those exciting baseball years. I recently sold my baseball players' autograph book to a collector for a surprising sum. Oh, how I hated to part with it!
My favorite Cub was right-fielder Bill "Swish" Nicholson, 5-time All-Star. He was hardly an all-time baseball titan, but he was interesting as heck. He was one of only 6 players in major league history to receive an intentional walk with the bases loaded.
Now THAT'S a dandy tid-bit of Chicago Cub lore, to be sure!
