Solicitor General Robert Bork dismisses Watergate special prosecutor Archibald Cox; Attorney General Richardson and Deputy Attorney General Ruckelshaus resign in protest. Cox had conducted a detailed investigation of the Watergate break-in that revealed that the burglary was just one of many possible abuses of power by the Nixon White House. Nixon had ordered Richardson to fire Cox, but he refused and resigned, as did Ruckelshaus when Nixon then asked him to dismiss the special prosecutor. Bork agreed to fire Cox and an immediate uproar ensued. This series of resignations and firings became known as the Saturday Night Massacre and outraged the public and the media. Two days later, the House Judiciary Committee began to look into the possible impeachment of Nixon.

Nixon was absolute child’s-play compared to the Clintons
I did not remember this.....now I know why Bork was ‘borked’. The Democrats never forget......
Robert Bork’s role in the “Saturday Night Massacre” is more than a mere historical footnote. I’ve heard that it was one of the major reasons why a lot of Republicans in the U.S. Senate had no interest in extending themselves to publicly support him when he was getting railroaded in his Supreme Court confirmation hearing.
Nah, Teddy Kennedy had strategic visions that went far beyond revenge for Watergate.
Look at all he accomplished by keeping Bork off the Court.
Anthony Kennedy is the gift to Liberals that just keeps on giving....and giving......and giving.....and giving......
Think back to the ‘era’ and mind set and the following bumper sticker:
IMPEACH THE COX SACKER
I find it baffling that Nixon forced his Attorney General Richard Kleindienst out of office in 1973, early in the Watergate scandal. Kleindienst, a Goldwater man, would never have hired Archibald Cox as the Watergate special prosecutor. Cox was a Kennedy man who had served as JFK’s Solicitor General.
On this day in history, the Nixon administration showed that it had more ethics than the Obama administration.
They hate it when an enemy is as ruthlessly partisan as they are.
