My computer has been running fine until now, malwarebytes runs each day as does Windows Defender. I turned my computer off today and came home, turned it on and I get a message that says: The stub received bad data...so far this is when I try to get into malwarebytes program and windows defender. NOt sure about other programs. All of my updates seem to have disappeared.
What is a program I can use online to check for a virus?
I am not computer savvy when it comes to computer problems.

Try the below methods and check if that helps:
Method 1: Run the SFC.
Follow the below steps:
Open Command Prompt.
Select “Run as Administrator”.
Type “sfc /scannow” without quotes and hit Enter.
Now check for the issue.
Method 2: Run the DISM Tool.
If the issue persists, I would have you run the DISM tool to check the system health and will try to restore the files.
Click on ‘Start’.
Enter ‘Command prompt’ in the Search box.
In the list of results, swipe down on or right-click Command prompt, and then tap or click ‘Run as administrator’.
In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following commands. Press the Enter key after each command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
To close the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type Exit, and then press Enter.
Note: The tool might take 15-20 minutes to finish running, so please do not cancel it.

Don’t use Avast if you use an email program instead of webmail.
When Avast scans attachments, it can activate viruses in them.
Got Cryptowall that way. Avast sucks.
Put Bitdefender on after Avast failed me on my PC...4 hard drives encrypted. Ran it on my laptop and scanned the .PST file for my email program with Bitdefender and there were dozens of emailed virus attachments there.
(Used to do a lot of business with Chinese suppliers. They had a tendency to send you viruses once you stopped buying from them).
Restart in Safe Mode and try to run those programs. Getting there has changed in Win10.

Agreed. I believe they are coming out with new MacBook pro’s soon.. Wait about a year for that cycle to settle down. You will never regret it. Yeah it’s more expensive in the beginning, but your computer will last for twice the amount of time. Even more than that if you count how a Windows machine starts to bog down after about 6 months to 1.5 years of usage.
Also the operating system upgrades on a mac are always free and absolutely seamless. No data loss - I have never had a glitch upgrading. I can leave my mac on for 6 months to a year at a time. I just close the lid and when I open it ... right back where i left off in a few seconds...
I moved to mac in 2008 and have never glanced back... mac essentially runs on freebsd which is a rock solid OS that has been around for a long long time...
Nobody gives a damn about a Mac, or about Linux, at a time like this.

Windows Defender is completely useless and a complete waste of resources.
Not sure why you run AntiMalwareBytes every day, either.
But beyond all of that, Windows 10 will cause you nothing but heartache for as long as you attempt to keep using it.
I agree with max americana. If you were in Houston, I’d send you to the Computer Hospital. They fixed the Toshiba Satellite C655 I’m now typing on for exactly $30 after I’d flashed the BIOS with the Toshiba supplied BIOS update. It was on a computer where I knew my wife, who is by no means a computer expert, innocently downloaded a virus - i.e. totally MY fault. BTW, the $30 included pickup AND delivery at my current apartment ! No Windows beyond 7 is worth a damn anyway. BTW, you can reach the Computer Hospital at 713-472-4357 or me at 713-835-9860. I am vitally interested as I need to purchase a laptop for my Goddughter anyway, and they are ALL Windows 10. ‘Nuff said ?
I have had no problems with Win 10 and think it is an excellent OS. As for MalWareBytes, I agree that running it daily is massive overkill. I run MWB, then Spybot each once a week.
First, ask how old is your computer ?
2-3-4 years old, it might not be capable of moderan updates.
When you shop for a replacement, consider iMac. Bought mine in 2011.
Updates every few months, all free.
Calamity ? Apple has a helper, toll free.
No security system required.
I write freelance articles and take photos for our local paper. My Mac is indefigable.
Find your nearest “UBREAKIFIX” location and take it to them.
When I had a PC, I paid my internet provider $15 extra a month, for THEM to fix my PC. I could call them 24/7 for help.
