Miami (AFP) - Levels of the planet's three most dangerous greenhouse gases are rising, and fossil fuels must be taxed to protect children from the turmoil of rising seas and extreme storms, climate scientist James Hansen warned Tuesday.
Otherwise, young people face the "dubious" proposition of somehow sucking carbon dioxide from the air at a price tag of hundreds of trillions of dollars in the next century, said Hansen, who leads the climate science program at Columbia University's Earth Institute.
"The science has become crystal clear," Hansen told reporters on a conference call to discuss his latest research paper, entitled "Young People's Burden: The Requirement of Negative CO2 Emissions."
"We have to phase out carbon emissions over the next few decades," said Hansen, describing the actions of the US government up until now as "grossly inadequate."

This charlatan should be in a dark prison cell by now.
Ooops, I forgot..
Women, children and minorities hardest hitTM
Fire parasitical tax sucking pseudo scientists from the government payroll or watch your children suffer unimaginable tax bills.
climate "scientist" James Hansen
Jimmie can KMA! Fookin idjit.
No.
Chasing the laughable delusion of CO2 being a dangerous pollutant IS the hazard to our kids future.
They mean to bankrupt us with carbon taxes.
CO2 is essential to life.
It is plant food.
Just last week I heard it was too late. Now we must act now “at a price tag of hundreds of trillions of dollars...”
“at a price tag of hundreds of trillions of dollars”
And that my friends, is what it’s all about.
“Plants” suck out carbon dioxide.
Hansen is a gov’t funded hack.
Since when do our kids’ futures mean anything to DC denizens. Nevertheless, it’s a nitwit argument.
+1
These imbeciles can’t even pass a working healthcare system, but we should give them an energy tax in order to fix the climate of the planet?!? It’s simply amazing that it’s 2016 and such lunacy still passes for serious political debate.
A political statement from a scientist.
How odd...
We have an initiative here in Washington to enact a carbon tax. The signs say “Tax pollution, not people”.
I didn’t know that pollution had an income stream or an address where they could send/receive tax notices and payments.
Tax fossil fuels and our children will be sweltering or shivering in darkened homes, standing in long lines for their ration of $6 per gallon gasoline, have their landscapes blotted out with forrests of bird chopping windmills and living in a Great Depression like economy.
I don’t dispute that the environment is constantly changing.
I do not think humans impact it as much as these guys think. And I certainly do not believe that taxing folks to “address” these issues is a very effective way to manage ANY problem.
If things are really going to go belly up, there will be someone somewhere who can make a go of a business. They become rich and the world benefits.
The free market would be more efficient and better at doing this than a controlled market.
When will people realize this?
More climate shakedown from so-called “scientists”.
I also reside in your state although on the sane side of the mountains. Inslee’s carbon tax boondoggle will surely pass based on the past idiocy of the Greater Seattle voters.
Oh, this yutz again. I wish he’d go carbon-neutral and never speak again.
Why won’t someone ask the question, “Climate guys, are you talking about CO2 or air pollution?” Simple question.
