Sounds like you are not “fully” supporting the police, because they are simply enforcing the law — you get arrested for stealing/possessing stolen property.

He probably found it beside the road that runs behind the grocery store. Shopping carts get stolen alot too.

Was the particular milk crate stolen or was it abandoned? Did the owner report it stolen and make an attempt to recover it? I could see arresting the guy for suspicion of theft if there had been a report of a stolen crate, but with all the abandoned crates I see laying around this criminal charge is going to be very hard to prove in court.
