It does indeed drive me nuts when I hear the talking heads saying "outside the Margin of Error" as if it means much. But I don't think its accurate to say they are figments of the imagination. It is a real thing used in probability theory. Its just not useful to know, and is misleading when it comes to political polls.

Because polls have been used as propaganda with great effect, I can’t see how we just ignore them. We ignore them at our peril. Even if some of us here at FR are immune, our neighbors are not. We have to get the word out that the only important thing is that we vote, without allowing any media including polls results to demoralize us.
