The alleged food stamp fraud amounted to less than $4,000 and the burglary involved a vacant apartment with no threats to human life. But when it came time for Erie County Judge David Foley to set bail at a Lovejoy store owner’s arraignment Tuesday, he looked at the bigger picture.
It’s going to take $2 million to get Ahmed Alshami out of jail.
In setting the high amount, Foley noted that Alshami, 37, arrested Friday on four nonviolent felony charges, has 10 previous arrests – including two felonies.
The defendant also has a history of not showing up for court appearances – or for disciplinary hearings at City Hall regarding his family’s operating license for the IGA Community Express Mart, at Ludington and Davey streets. He most recently missed a Council hearing on Aug. 15.
Assistant District Attorney Gary M. Ertel asked the judge to consider Alshami a flight risk and have him held without bail, noting that after the defendant missed a recent appearance in Buffalo City Court, he allegedly said “he was too busy to bother coming that day.”
“He has shown a wanton disregard for the justice system,” Ertel argued.

And, there have been so many cases just like this, of food stamp fraud. Can’t we tighten up how EBT cards and food stamps, if anyone still uses the actual coupons, are used??
Can’t we do more audits of these stores, or do something with how eligibility is determined, so that we can be sure that the financial aid we give to poor people goes to the purpose intended????

We should have a law on the book in every state for food stamp fraud.
In my area we hear stories of people selling food stamps, trading food stamps for drugs. This should be a priority for federal, state and local government to stop.
It can be done.

I’ve wondered the same thing. Why is every 7-11 and WaWa run by an East Indian?
They run them because they pool their money and get low interest loans as immigrants to buy one They then get 7 years without having to pay federal taxes. At that time they “sell” the business to another in the family and get another 7 years tax free.
Some also scam the sales tax system by not recording cash sales. Ask for receipt if you pay cash. It p1sses them off! They also scam the Food stamp system as stated in the article.
There is another story or Facebook post today of a Moose limb women being recorded loading her car with pop she purchased with a N.Y. itbefree card for their own Store. She’s a foul mouthed wench. I think it is the same women in the video in this story.
