Greetings Gardeners. Trip last week was great. Food excellent. I did indulge my carb cravings just a little, but only ate half the cheese cake, omitted potatoes altogether except for a cup of clam chowder, and only ate one bread roll and two crackers.

However, I did have a biscuit and gravy and two slices of bacon every morning to go with my eggs. The rest of the time my carbs were something green: asparagus, salad, or broccoli.

Returned from the trip, to find Hubby on crutches, and had to make an immediate trip to a nearby town to get his Rx filled at Walgreens, since all the pharmacies in our town were closed. He stepped on something, it got infected, and he hadn't been home from the ER for very long when I returned.

So we went through the Steak and Shake there for supper, and I had a double steak burger with cheese, no fries, and no sugar iced tea, but I ate the whole bun. In spite of some pretty high fat intake and lots of meat, that week, my blood test on Monday had the best lipid profile for 15 years. All cholesterol and triglycerides normal. Trying to remember what I have done differently as there was a big change in just a month. LOL.

Spent the rest of the week running hubby to various doctor's, including podiatrist consult and MRI today. Surgery is a possibility. I also woke up with a cold today. Made some chicken soup broth to sip, and took some Vitamin C. Anyone have a favorite tea, soup, or food for a cold?

Started a strength training program on Thursday, and can hardly sit down or get up. Walking down the hallway and my quads just gave out several times today, but I was able to avoid falling. Had to do some stairs and used a lot of arm assistance with the railing.

I only did 10 squats(no weight), 10 military press(just the bar-no added weight), 10 dead lifts(bar only). I can't believe that such minimum effort made me so sore. LOL

I got some bags of potting mix on sale at Walmart for better than half price. Walmart employee loaded it, and I haven't unloaded it yet. I will just drag it out onto the wagon and then drag it off the wagon on the patio, and under the patio table till next spring.

I haven't been strong enough this year to handle the large bags, and that's one reason behind the strength training. Hope to be able to do what I used to be able to do next by next spring.

Have a few tomatoes. Picked a few ears of corn. Will process those tomorrow. Garden is pretty much done, and I still haven't had a chance to get the garlic in the ground. It's been pretty chilly here the last few days. Housework is stacked up too. Hope I am less sore and feeling better tomorrow, as I have a lot to do.

Hope all is well with you. Prayers up for all. Have a great weekend. God Bless.

Pinging the List. I am already getting stuffed up again, so I probably will go back to bed shortly, after I finish my tea, but I look forward to catching up a bit later this weekend.

You are doing so great, thank you for posting.
I am getting some tomatoes from my little garden, the stink bugs have been a big problem damaging them. Next year I will but a net over them but not sure that will help.

Oh! Would love to be on your ping list! Gardened and made canned goods as an adolescent. I really want to get back into it! Thanks!

I’m drying some cayenne peppers now as they turn red. I’ll use these in my bean soup this fall and winter. When I feel the sniffles coming on I take a packet of Emergen-C.
It’s mixed in water or whatever and becomes a fizzy drink. 1000mg Vitamin C and has some B Vitamins, electrolytes, and other goodness mixed in. I haven’t had a cold or flu for 4 or 5 years now. Buffalo wings seems to cure about any sinus problems I get from time to time. I like Lipton tea bags called Spiced Cinnamon Chai and often mash up a few whole clove buds to go in it. They’re in most spice sections. Started my own strength training today, went fishing this evening and caught about 20, lol. It was good to get out, I’ve been suffering all summer, surprised I made it. VA doctors, don’t get me started.

The plants have been pulled and put on the compost pile and I planted a cover crop of Common Vetch on 4 or 5 beds like this one to over winter. Our winters are very wet but no normal hard freezes.

This is our first year growing German Butter Ball potatoes and most of them developed this defect but the Yukon Gold and Desiree did not. Any clue why they did this?

Prayers for you and your hubby and thanks for always starting the thread. We keep on gardening no matter what our bodies are going through, it seems. Picked a beautiful perfect green zucchini yesterday (west Michigan). Thankfully they grow slower when the weather is cooler. Some San Marzano tomatoes left on the vine. Other tomatoes are done except for one volunteer Russian yellow. Had 6 or 7 volunteer cantalopes which I never grow. They were small but very tasty, once I figured out when to pick them. Still getting some second growth broccoli. My cilantro has turned to coriander which don’t use enough to keep so that will go on the compost today. Still have banana peppers going and those Costa Rican sweet red peppers. Even though we were not able to plant as much as normal we still had a good garden and some nice new surprises this year to enjoy. I got seed starter on sale this year too, 4 smaller bags for 50 cents a bag. It will be enough for us. The flat Dutch cabbages I have on order should be coming in 2 weeks. I like to do my kraut mid October. I don’t grow it just because I don’t have the room. Plus I have a great source. Hummingbirds are pretty much gone. Seems like it’s a couple of weeks early for them. Found some nice big pots on sale for patio planters for next year. As most of you are I am really looking forward to next year.

Greeneyes .... hope your cold goes away before it gets too bad & your husbands foot heals up quickly!

Tuesday afternoon (in between rainy days), was ‘clean up the garden’ day and it probably took me 4-5 hours. Most of the tomato plants were ready to pull up - any large(r) green tomatoes were pulled & are ripening in the house. The egpplants, basil & zinnias were all pulled up as well. I left the 4 pepper plants - they are still producing. It was rather shocking how sore my back was the next two days - the mind is willing but the body is becoming aged.

My SIL gave me an heirloom variety kale - Lacinato aka Tuscan Kale or Dinosaur Kale. I read up on it & it sounds wonderful. I had a 9-plant flat that sat around for 2 weeks until I could get it into the ground Tuesday. Since then, we’ve had nothing but rainy days, including a brief spell of hail (quarter sized) & my kale is now “I-survived-the-hail” kale ... it’s growing like a weed - obviously loves Garden Tone & rain.

Overall, I was very happy with my tomatoes this year. I will not grow Mr. Stripey again - very disappointed. I loved the Amelia & Celebrity tomatoes & the Parks Whopper Improved. I had a Sun Sugar (orange) cherry tomato plant for the 3rd year - probably the sweetest one I’ve ever tasted & produces prolific numbers of tomatoes. It took over (again) the spot where I was growing it. I’m not sure I’ll do one next year. The eggplants were outstanding - never been able to grow them before and I got two crops off of both plants (Black Beauty & Ichiban). The basil was great - enough to make a large pesto batch. The real “fun” was the zinnia patch - I sprinkled two seed packets in the middle of a bed that only had two tomato plants in it (one on each end). My mom made numerous beautiful arrangement & took them to shut-ins, gave to the staff at our church, and to relatives for birthdays. I’m planning a new raised bed just for a cut flower garden next year.

The not-so-secret secret to the great garden this year was lots of rain from early on all the way through July. We had a dry August, but everything was doing so well, I only watered once. Now, we’re back to lots of rain again ... 9.91 inches for the month of September which is 6” more than normal. If I plant more in the ‘fall’ garden (I plan on it), then everything should do well unless we get a very early cold snap. I can cover my beds to protect from frost. The other huge project & great success was my anti-crow fence ... LOVE it. Totally effective against the crows & it also kept out other animals (my brother’s dog who loves to eat Garden Tone & rolls in it, deer, skunks, etc.).

It’s always a ‘sad’ day when I pull up the garden, but seeing new plants growing is exciting. I’ve got lots of ideas for next year as far as what will go in which bed - hope to have a more organized and productive ‘plant plan’.

Hope you and hubby get to feeling better.

I only have butternut squash, a few late-planted zucchini, tomatoes, and bell peppers left in the garden. The rest quit, thank heaven ;) It was an exhausting gardening season but I learned a lot - and have ideas on how to make it easier next year.

Horrible chest congestion, etc; off work all week.

Weather still holding, and wife has been picking beans, squash, & tomatoes. .

I dragged myself down there a couple of days ago to dig what was left of the carrots. Something got in, are all the tops, and broke off a lof them & and ate that, too. Some even looked like they had been dug out. :-(

Down to the last 18 tomatoes going. 3 picked today from that.

Some Basil plants slightly produce - they are near their end.

Sweet snacking peppers - 4 going but only 1 turning orange (finally).

Still about 11-13 peppers going - at least 6 are purple.

Carrots I ain’t digging up until late October or early November. Will report how those went. Best 50 cent package of seeds I’ve seen yet (Walmart close-out).

Wish I could have found more.

I’ve got lots of healthy pepper plants - probably 75 - but no greenhouse way to keep them going. A shame, really.

In a greenhouse I’m sure they’d produce quite well.

I have strong Tomato plants as well - probably 3-6 dozen or more growing. Running out of time - I doubt they’ll have time to produce.

We spent 2 1/2 weeks in Sept visiting a new grandson at Wahiawa, HI. What a change in vegetation from the Bluegrass State. Fresh mangos, star fruit, pineapples several others and the Kona coffee is hard to beat.
