By the middle of the century, the “th” sound will have vanished from the English spoken in London due to the high level of immigrants who cannot pronounce it, linguists have said. In a study that shows the impact immigration is having on the English language, academics at the University of York say that Estuary English, the dialect currently spoken in London and south east England, will gradually be replaced by a heavily migrant-influenced English.

<< Dr Dominic Watt, Senior Lecturer at the University of York, said: “Given the status of London as the linguistically most influential city in the English-speaking world, we can expect to see significant changes between now and the middle of the century. >>

Prof Watt doesn’t seem to get out of York much. *London* is the most influential city in the English speaking world? ROFLMAO Maybe a few hundred years ago, but I think he may need to get the news about that little colony across the pond that told George to FU a while ago.

In James Herriot's book All Creatures Great and Small, a veterinarian who comes to work in Yorkshire finds it difficult to understand the local dialect.

The author, whose real name was James Alfred Wright, was born in Sunderland, in the region north of Yorkshire, but grew up in Glasgow. The book and its sequels were based on his own experiences as a country veterinarian in Yorkshire.

Addendum on James Alfred Wright—he was born on Oct. 3, 1916, so the day after tomorrow would have been his 100th birthday. He died in 1995.

How many English-speakers in India speak English as their first language? My guess is that most of them speak it as a second language. The fate of the language will most likely be determined by the native speakers.

What drives me crazy is how so many people pronounce “st” like “sht”. Half of the younger news people and talking heads. Weather girls. (Maria Molina - “shtrong winds”.) “Intelligent” talking heads. Michelle Obama. Seems to be females primarily.

strength = shtrength
struggle = shtruggle
street = shtreet

Why does nobody correct them?
