And Oscar Taveras, teh young outfielder for the Cardinals, who died ina car accident during teh 2014 playoffs. The CArdinals’ pitcher tonight is wearing a cap with “OT 18” on one side and “JF 16” on the other.
Their SS, Aledmys Diaz (whom I think is going to be VERY good), was a neighbor of Fernandez’s growing up. He lived three houses away and they played together from Little League until Jose left for America.
It’s very sad.
And he was one of the best pitchers in the game and would hve been a free agent after the 2018 season. His son will never know him, except as a legend.
The Marlins say they will play tomorrow. I can only imagine what it will be like.
I was at Yankee Stadium the night after Thurman Munson’s death. It was bittersweet, a great tribute, but horribly unfortunate that it was necessary. The Yankees came on the field with no catcher. (He came out later.) The fans gave a long ovation when Thurman’s p[icture came on the board.
I can only imagine that Marlins park will be somewhat like that tomorrow night.
