Neither booze nor drugs played a role in the boating accident that killed Miami Marlins pitching great Jose Fernandez, authorities said Sunday.
The 24-year-old star hurler and two male buddies died when their 30-foot boat crashed off Miami Beach around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, Florida official said.

Looks like it hit the jetty to the right and flipped up and over it landing upside down to the left.
They must have been moving.
And Oscar Taveras, teh young outfielder for the Cardinals, who died ina car accident during teh 2014 playoffs. The CArdinals’ pitcher tonight is wearing a cap with “OT 18” on one side and “JF 16” on the other.
Their SS, Aledmys Diaz (whom I think is going to be VERY good), was a neighbor of Fernandez’s growing up. He lived three houses away and they played together from Little League until Jose left for America.
It’s very sad.
And he was one of the best pitchers in the game and would hve been a free agent after the 2018 season. His son will never know him, except as a legend.
MLB is poorer without Fernandez, Taveras, and Adenhart. Sad indeed.
The Marlins say they will play tomorrow. I can only imagine what it will be like.
I was at Yankee Stadium the night after Thurman Munson’s death. It was bittersweet, a great tribute, but horribly unfortunate that it was necessary. The Yankees came on the field with no catcher. (He came out later.) The fans gave a long ovation when Thurman’s p[icture came on the board.
I can only imagine that Marlins park will be somewhat like that tomorrow night.
He and Gio Gonzalez were buddies. They’re both of Cuban extraction and both lived in Miami. They knew a lot of the same people.
David Phelps is going to be the answer to a sad trivia question.
If I had to guess, I’d bet the boat was on auto pilot. One of the biggest things to watch for are idiot power boaters who turn on the auto pilot and then go below deck “for just a few seconds”. If you set your auto pilot and GPS to return to your slip in the marina (without using waypoints to set a path) the auto pilot will take the boat in a straight line to your destination. If there happens to be a big rock in the way, the auto pilot does not care.
That boat did not have an auto pilot
does this miracle GPS you speak of coupled to an auto pilot park you in the slip and secure all the lines too....
Your funny
“Living his life and having a good time as 20-somethings often do. Nothing wrong with that.”
Drinking and drive a boat fast in the dark? Yeah there IS something wrong with that.
