Tucked away in a warehouse on an industrial estate in the non-descript suburb of Van Nuys in Los Angeles, a revolution is taking place. And the revolutionaries? Five twentysomething college friends who are trying their hand at urban farming.
Their business is called Coalo Valley Farms but it couldn't be any further from a picture of agrarian life. The warehouse holds thousands of "micro livestock" as co-founder and chief executive Elliot Mermel calls them. That's crickets and mealworms to you and me.
This is California's first insect farm for human consumption and its owners have grand plans. "We know that insects are a sustainable source of protein - and while the world already struggles to feed seven billion, we want to try and help find a way to feed the future generations," says Elliot.

Bleep NO!I can already hear Michelle telling the School Districts “Let them eat bugs!”
My 30 acre hay field around my house is saturated with crickets and grasshoppers. Please come and take them all!!!
While here - feel free to take the ants, scorpions, and mice.
I want to start one of these farms, because obviously it is easy to sell progressives anything.
OK...yah...I'm deplorable.
I will eat mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians.
I’m not doing insects.
Ah,tarantulas with garlic in oil!
Oh, hell no. Only if I’m starving.
I’ve said it before, when insects are properly prepared they can be very tasty. My favorite way to prepare grasshoppers is to feed them to a trout.
Pretty sure a tobacco “sin tax” needs to be applied here,,,
I had grasshoppers in Puerto vallarta, Mexico, at a very high-class restaurant.
The first crunchy bites were pretty good. But it didn’t grow on me. I don’t plan a repeat performance.
I’m not a fan of sushi. (with or without crunch insects)
Crickets No way. We get them in the house every summer. They are freaky ugly.
Worms, not so bad. I’ve eaten mealworms. No real flavor but whatever.
Chocolate covered grasshoppers are kind of OK and spiders have a weird little spicy flavor when you bite down on them.
You can make bread from cricket flour. I bet Venezuelans could make use of that information. Know someone in Venezuela? It beats starving to death.
LOL, I think a lot of those animals eat insects. . .they are the insect processing plants and convert them into tasty proteins!
They are called “chilaquilles” in Baja California. I was in a good restaurant there and there were at least 5 different types of Huevos Rancheros with chilaquilles on the menu. I will give it a try next time.

Hey! Stop that! You are eating my food's food. And my food needs to grow big and strong, so I can have tasty meals.
Even in the post-Barack Hussein world, where his socialism may drive the United States into Venezuela territory, no, thank you. I’ll shoot and eat real food. The drones on EBT can eat the bugs that Michelle Obama wants to feed them.
