A Sub-$700 Colt M4? The 5.56mm Colt Expanse. Full Review.

When it comes to ARs, it all goes back to Colt. Sure, Eugene Stoner at ArmaLite developed the 7.62mm AR-10 that would evolve to become the AR-15 in 5.56mm, but it was Colt who purchased the rights to the latter design and not only captured government contracts for it as the M16 family of firearms, but also brought it to the civilian market at first as the AR-15 SP1 and then as the “Sporter” family of AR-15 rifles.

Now, you should realize that while the AR is a well-accepted and extremely popular firearm today, it was extremely controversial in those early days. With a reputation for a perceived lack of reliability and power (compared against the more traditionally designed M14), the 5.56mm AR had heaps of criticism put upon it. And it was during this time that Colt was the only game in town for those who wanted a civilian-legal AR rifle, and it was not the huge market that it is today.

It is my opinion that the 5.45 x 39 round is more close-combat suited and I prefer it over the 5.56. IF I build another AR it will be in 5.45 x 39. Until then my Bulgy with ATI furniture will have to do.

Shooting an AR is almost as good as (fill-in the blank).

Never wamred to the Sporter. I couldn’t see how eliminating the dust cover and forward assist could lower the price much. Especially when they ended up shipping with bolt carriers that had the forward assist notches machined in.

Now Colt has the Sporter II with forward assist, dust cover, and same low price.

Ruger’s AR-556 isn’t too shabby, either. A low priced alternative to their piston driven SR-556.

It still has that crappy Colt trigger. Spend a few extra bucks and get a Rock River.

At one time I owned 3 Colt H-Bars and one Sporter. I was forced to sell them along with over a hundred other guns because of financial difficulty.

I sure wish I could have saved one of the H-Bars. They were as fine a firearm as I have ever had and I have had a lot. Beautifully made, performed about as well as it was possible.

I cannot praise them enough.

The out of the box Rock River trigger is as good as any aftermarket I’ve ever tried, including Giesele.

Every Colt I’ve ever tried has a spongy piece of crap military trigger.

And until this thing came along, RR was at least $300 less for a base model.
