I am surprised the SAS is using a Barrett, when a company in their own country makes a more accurate, and much lighter weapon in .338 Lapua.

A fine weapon it is, but at 1500 meters the 50 caliber has a better chance of hitting the target. If I am not mistaken I think the Brits use both weapons.
The SAS also uses a .50 cal rifle made by Accuracy international which is an anti materiel rifle. The .338 is an anti personnel rifle. The benefit of using .50 cal is that the results can be more spectacular. Special forces have wide discretion in the choice of arms.
