If I’m reading the OP correctly, it’s more of an on the job issue, which needs to be handled carefully. Others have mentioned it as well. Political discussion isn’t appropriate at work, especially since HR departments seem to lean left. Document any aggressive behavior and find allies if possible. You need witnesses to anything shady that should happen. Always keep your cool and state in no uncertain terms that you don’t care to discuss politics at work due to their being “a diverse group of people here, who all probably feel strongly about the subject.” Use their own language to shut them down.

I have always discussed politics at work, both in insurance and IT. Since being fired for supporting Goldwater, I have never been penalized for my opinions.

I’ve known many, many others fired for their politics. The most frequent situation is Democrats firing other Democrats over different sides in the primaries.

The second biggest reason is HR controlled by Diversity Nazis who want to teach a lesson to any manager who dares to hire a minority without going through their HR department. Kraft Foods, Allstate, Discover come to mind.
