A story was related to me where this black woman named her daughter Female (pr. fee-mal-ee) because that was what was on the info sheet attached to her crib.

I went to high school with a girl named Yvonne, whose parents wanted to seem cosmopolitan but missed the mark by pronouncing her name Wye-vahn.

We knew a maternity ward nurse who had a woman who named her daughter “Pajama” (she pronounced it “Pa’- juh-muh”).

When asked where she got the name she said she saw the word in the Sears Roebuck catalog and thought it sounded really classy. True story.

Femolly in various spellings is another fairly common name in certain quarters.
