Dubbed a "business necessity" rather than a leisure destination, Newark in New Jersey, US, has landed the top spot as the world's least friendly city.
Newark's "extreme traffic and poor signage" have been cited as reasons for the city's lack of congeniality, while its status as an airport city is said to make it crowded and overpriced.
One disappointed traveller recently said Newark was "one of the saddest looking cities" they had ever seen.

I like Gandolfini and I like the Sopranos. But he’s gone now, sorry to say.
If you think Tony’s a mensch, you might like `Mad Dogs’ too since a character on that show, `Christopher Moltisanti’ is on that show now.
?
What diagnosis did the orthopedic doctor give Pauly when Carmine pulled his thumbs off?
“This man has a speech impediment.”
And we don’t have a midwestern drawl here in Indiana.
Wasn’t Lou Costello (comedian, Abbot and Costello) from New Jersey?
You Garden staters are a little shy. Hmmm.
“Then what the heck is Chicago? How many shootings and deaths this past weekend???”
In Chicago, they shoot you with a happy smile.
I HATE Newark airport. It’s the turd in a porta-potty that’s been dumped in a cesspool that drains in to the Port of New Jersey. BUT. That’s where my European flights usually connect.
Southern Jersey may be a little bit better, no? Or is the cancer going to spread even there?
Shame. My company’s HQ is in Newark, don’t go there unless absolutely necessary.
A WW2 vet would have what it takes to live and thrive in NJ these days, even Newark. Not so easy for the rest of us though.
I’ve taken the train from Newark airport to Penn Station. Looks a post-apocalyptic wasteland, with crumbling warehouses, factories and tenements and heavily polluted marshlands. Manhattan has to dump its crap somewhere and New Jersey seems to be the end of the sewer.
I don’t have that much exposure to Newark, and it was 20 years ago, but I don’t recall it as being any worse than Philadelphia by the Schuykill bridge, or the bad part of the Bronx. I remember their airport was weird, an elevated ramp for rental car return that was very easy to miss. Didn’t have good connections to here, either. Only bonus was the SAAB turboprop they used was actually a very nice, comfortable plane. Preferred those to that awful Fokker F-28 that USAir was so fond of.
But most of the farms are going the way of the dodo now, suburbia is spreading. There are, however, vast stretches of pine barrens which could conceivably be developed but nobody has ever bothered so they remain wilderness.
Sorry too busy working
The taxes don’t pay themselves
Southern Jersey is like Alabama
Complete with the mullet, rusted out Camaro resting on blocks in the front lawn and missing teeth
Trenton? Seriously? That isn’t South Jersey
That is Central Jersey
Or North Jersey to a true Southern Jerseyian
I thought Trenton was pretty much part of Philadelphia now.
I've been laid over for hours and hours and hours at Newark airport over the years!
At least there are bars at the airport that you can drink at...while you are waiting for your connection.
I thought the Museum of Science and Trucking was really going to revitalize Newark.
