My one hope for a melon of any kind bit the dust today. It was a midget cantaloupe. Vine died and it was only a little bigger than a ping pong ball.
Next year, I’ll be planting a couple of pots of these and cukes in a pot and growing vertically. That seemed to work for the cukes this year. The same bugs hit them both in late August, so I’m hoping that they don’t come out in the spring and early summer.
I don’t know what happened to my cantelopes this time. They were doing great, healthy vines, loaded with big melons, then almost overnight, the melons turned to mush. I got one good melon from three hills.
I planted five hills of watermelon. There are more than we will be able to eat. I think I’ll send the extras to the produce auction on Friday, along with a couple hundred pounds of pie pumpkins.
