49ers preparing to put Colin Kaepernick ‘on ice’ in 2016?

At least two prominent NFL reporters believe the San Francisco 49ers could pull a RG3 on quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who could be protected in 2016 so the 49ers can save millions against injuries guarantees next offseason.

Albert Breer of MMQB became the latest national reporter to weigh in on Kaepernick Thursday morning.

“Colin Kaepernick’s injury history, combined with the heavy injury guarantees in his contract, would be a motivator to put him on ice for the year if the team isn’t sold he’ll rebound in Chip Kelly’s offense,” Breer wrote. “The Redskins pulled something similar last year—they knew Robert Griffin III wasn’t their guy, so they didn’t risk putting him on the field and triggering his 2016 injury guarantee.”

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk openly wondered the same idea on Monday.

“Absent a trade or a willingness to pay Kaepernick a lot of money to go away, the 49ers have the RGIII option at their disposal,” Florio said. “That would entail putting Kaepernick on the bench and keeping him in bubble wrap so that, come 2017, they won’t be strapped with a fully-guaranteed $14.5 million obligation that can’t be avoided before April 1 if he’s injured, again.”

Unless Chip Kelly fully believes in Kaepernick moving forward (and that’s a debatable premise, given his current standing in a starting battle with Blaine Gabbert, of all quarterbacks), the 49ers could protect themselves by shelving the former second-round pick as a third-stringer and then cutting Kaepernick before his $14.5 million becomes fully guaranteed on April 1st of 2017. Of course, if he’s injured at that time, the 49ers won’t have the option.

The Redskins played the same card on RG3 last season. After he suffered a concussion during the preseason, Washington all but shut down his season—stashing him behind Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy to protect him from another injury. His healthy season allowed the Redskins to part ways without the financial repercussions of his fifth-year, injury-guaranteed salary kicking in.

A tricky balancing act awaits the 49ers over the next few weeks. Kaepernick has been out while dealing with a “dead arm” issue, which has robbed Kelly and his staff of valuable time in the evaluation process. At some point soon, the 49ers will need to decide if Kaepernick is worth risking during the 2016 season. Then again, the franchise has 14,500,000 million reasons to stash him on the bench and set up a clean divorce next offseason.

This guy dresses like a total gavone, down to the ostentatious oversized luxury watch hanging low on his wrist over the cuff. The worst!

In an earlier interview after the flag incident Mr. Kaepernick stated, “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way.”
I notice Mr. Kaepernick waited until after he had signed that $114 million dollar contract before he felt his oppressed brothers’ pain...

For his own safety.....

Only way they'll cart him out there is if the starter and 2nd string have a Tony Romo swoon.

I suspect this is the reason for his anti-American actions. He’s going to play the race card when he gets fired.

As long as he is part of their Team, its No9ers for me.

My SiL is/was a rabid Steelers fan. Everything she owns is yellow and black.

Steelers signed Michael Vick.
She cut her allegiance and doesn't bother to watch them anymore.

All the real muslims around here would never have a red car. Only black, white, and silver.

I hope he gets stopped all the time by the cops to check if it’s his car. A little extra repression.

If he wasn’t adopted by those repressive white parents, he could have had the honor of being shot dead on the streets of Milwaukee. Potential thug that never was. Sad.

” That explains a lot, especially this latest behavior”

He hasn’t been that good the last few years. I was waiting for this type of story to break. IMO pulled this little stunt thinking the 49’ers would come down on him and then release him. His lawyer would have a huge lawsuit filed in days calling his release retaliatory for not standing for the National Anthem.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Oops, should have read more carefully, the 49’ers will sit him this year then release him. Pretty tough to claim he was cut lose for this stunt a year after it goes down.

Let the a$$hole play. I’m sure there’s a defensive player out there who can’t wait to breakthrough the line and hammer this motherf&#$er!!! I don’t watch much football but I swear I’d watch every 49ers game like an Indy 500 fan waiting for a pile up.

Yes - they should put him on ice.

Specifically, on an ice floe in the Arctic Ocean with neither food nor water.

Tens of thousands of fine men, far braver and better than he, died for that flag - White, Black, Hispanic, and Asian American - so that he could act the prima donna attention wh*re.
