My wife and I are considering a move. Here's why:
We were both raised in CT. We've lived in other places, but in our 20s. During that time we chose our spot because of things like skiing and close proximity to race tracks and stuff. You know... young people stuff.
We met in CT and got married there. We left CT to move "Back to America". We're both heavy republican and we're becoming somewhat isolationist.
We moved to PA to be close to family, and still (officially) out of the NE. We really, really really do not like government telling us what to do.
Our move to PA has been great. Nice people. Good economics. Our area of PA is like 90% republican and filled with good people that we call neighbors.
The state itself has a few things going against it: 1. Mandatory Vaccinations. I don't want to start an argument, I just don't want to live somewhere that requires my kids be injected with something that I don't agree with. 2. Homeschooling. I won't get any argument here but PA supplies the curriculum and requires that we teach it. It's the same liberal garbage that is found in Philly. 3. Some place where the laws aren't setup to keep the poor down. DMV laws go a long way to this. CT has no actual DMV laws. It's like Mad Max out there. And I'm talking Beyond Thunderdome Mad Max. Cowcatchers on trucks and stuff (And YES there are quite a few cars and trucks in CT with cowcatchers and spikes and stuff. It's comical). But in PA it costs about $1200-$1500 just to register a car. And if you lapse the insurance they pull your reg for 90 days. That means no licence plates. No driving. (I lapsed 3 months ago and bought insurance again. And now that I have insurance they are suspending my licence and my registrations for 90 days because of the lapse... in the past.)
I also don't want anything to do with public transportation. I want businesses and employment, not programs and services.
So my wife and I are basically walking around Google, Wikipedia and the internet in general and we found Berea, KY.
Anyone here living in Kentucky wanna weigh in on this ? I want to be free again, be surrounded by like-minded people and in the midst of my countrymen should the SHTF.
My friend is from the East, and that is where I would personally want to go... were I single. Just be alone and not bothered.
But the lack of jobs out there make for some pretty bored kids / desperate adults.
A combination I wouldn’t want to raise my family in.
The central part appears to be what we’re looking for. A good balance of civilization and 100+ acre parcels. I don’t mind working 40 minutes away (I own my own business, and have re-occurring revenue so I don’t really need to work work. But I would take on clients in the city)
Word: Jed Clampett LEFT Kentucky when he could afford to. Are you poor??
I am personally fascinated by the Southern culture. It’s definitely my preference over a state, like California or New York.
If it were possible, that’s probably where I’d hang my hat.
Lol!
“Someone on this board moved to KY from Seattle and loves it. Forget the posters name.”
Cuban leaf? He may’ve done a name change recently.
I found out once, after a very long and nerve-wracking day’s drive through heavy rain and snow, that Berea is dry. Otherwise, from what I saw of it, it seemed like a nice town.

For California.. was he stupid ?
:)
My IT firm works in NYC. I’m used to money. I don’t care anymore. I want my country back.
Leaving CT meant, on paper, that I would be poorer anywhere I went. The money simply isn’t out in the country for an I.T. Analyst. But that doesn’t matter, because my daughter is here now and I’ll pump gas for a living if it means that she won’t be exposed to liberal “tolerance training”.
I’ll sign her up with the 4H and let nature take it’s course.
Wyoming if you like the outdoors, guns, hunting and freedom. Just stay away from Jackson and Teton county. Oh and be ready for long winters and tourists in the summer.
Q: How do we know the toothbrush was invented in Kentucky?
A: If it were invented anywhere else, it would be called a teethbrush.
Most important consideration for moving anywhere: serious job prospects.
As someone else pointed out above, also consider activities for your kids. Bored does lead to trouble.
Tehehehe
I would suggest you drive down I-75 from Lexington to the Knoxville area and check it out. Or try further east in the Kingsport/Johnson City area. It is even more conservative.
I live in Knox county and my property taxes on 11 acres is a little over $500 per year. It is zoned agricultural so that helps but residential zoning wouldn't be that much more.
We do have high sales tax at 9.25% but I would rather pay that than income tax. Area's outside Knox County are usually a little lower.
Car registration and license plates are a little over $60 per year.
There is plenty to do here with the mountains, lakes, state and national parks.
The weather is good for the most part with very little snow.
And you won't have any trouble with homeschooling they way you want.
There are areas outside of Lexington that would suit you. Danville is lovely. Harrisburg, Winchester and Versailles are nice too. Berra may be a little raw for you.

Yeah, Kentucky seems to be 3 different states in it’s liquor laws. Most people describe their towns by these adjectives first: Wet, Moist and Dry.
I don’t drink so it’s not a deal breaker. It’s a bit odd though, and a question of freedoms in the US that isn’t lost on me.
But where I grew up in Shelton CT Rock and Roll was banned... and yes, I got a citation for playing rock and roll there in my car in a parking lot. (Rock and Roll could not be heard more than 5 feet away from a vehicle)
In PA buying liquor is a law lesson onto itself. You can buy beer to go at any bar, you can’t buy liquor and beer at the same place, all liquor and beer marts are owned by the state and the state attempted to make it’s own Wine from California vinyards. It’s a mess. The state has once again ruined something beautiful.
No area is perfect .. if it was everyone on FR would have the same 3 octets in their IP address. I just want a place where I can help “Make it great” and be a member of the winning team for once. In my actual County in PA I’m part of that team. The local county really wants to divide itself from the democratic BS that we’re surrounded by. And I’m ok with that aspect of where I live but the homeschooling / vaccine thing is the deal breaker here.
“Kentucky is about three states in one.....eastern, central and western. Western is more southern/Midwest. Eastern is, well, unusual. And central is quite nice.”
My job often takes me to KY, and I agree with your assessment. Eastern KY (especially SE KY) is another world. To say it is “unusual” is being tactful, and generous.
LOL!
Makes me think of an old Night Court episode where a guy hands the judge a photo of his wife and the judge says..”Nice tooth”
I LOVE Wyoming. My wife isn’t that ... Hearty.
But I would setup a lean-to in Wyoming and be happy for the rest of my life.
I agree with you. Tennessee is better than Ky, though it does tax unearned income (dividends and interest).
