Oh, sorry I didn't read this until now. What happened Donna, was in thew early nineties there were so many homeless in the streets of Rio, they were overflowing down from the favelas. Crime was bad then (somehow it has gotten worse) and you simply could not escape them.

Then Rio won rights to hold the first "Earth Conference" - an international environmental forum to deal with the fairy tale of global warming and other falsehoods. I mean, who cares if it is real or not? They won something.

So prior to this conference they embarked on a mass effort to clean up the image of Rio. Mostly, that meant removing the homeless. They had an efficient solution. A final one.

They removed what homeless they could and relocated them. For those who would not leave, they killed them.

Everyone knew about it. Murders were constant and brutal. Military police were known to participate whether by private contract or state orders. No one who lived in the streets was going to be permitted to continue either in the streets and living if they didn't agree with the first part. They buried them outside of the city in the hills.

Again, everyone knew about it. They spoke in hushed whispers behind closed doors of what they saw, what they heard and what others spoke of. It was a wholesale slaugter.

When I got back weeks before the conference, there were 2 homeless in the street out of the sea of thousands I saw during my first visit. World cup fever had struck by then, Brasil moved on...I mean FUTBOL!!! They won that year.

Thousands of dead homeless never lived long enough to witness it.

Anyway, years later I met a girl who's father escapes the Nazis and settled in Rio. She explained that the homeless were animals and could not be salvaged as human beings. So much for the lessons of WWII and human compassion.

Anyway, I take from the culture the beauty it offers, but completely recognize it's current state of "not ready for prime time". A pity the olympic committee, which thrives on bribery, didn't recognize this before this disaster.

Oh well, at least they avoided Chicago...

What scares me Donna is that this is not widely known history. I speak of it to remember the dead. This was a massive atrocity. It is repeated regularly, I am told.

Anyway, those who travel down to these regions and do not respect what has happened and what can happen are courting total disaster.

Thanks for your response. I knew nothing of this before now but I believe every word you say.

She explained that the homeless were animals and could not be salvaged as human beings.

If is the same process always, dehumanize and then it's acceptable to kill.

I thought of this when I read one of those anti-Trump columns early on where the author said the unemployed ex-middleclass now drug/porn user Americans should just die. It was like a foreshadowing of just such things.

I'm glad I believe in Jesus.
