A Team GB athlete has been robbed at gunpoint in Rio while on a night out and officials could impose an outright ban on partying in the city 'after dark', it was revealed today. The incident, which happened in the early hours of Tuesday morning, has led to a warning that it is 'not worth the risk' to leave the athletes village, or wander around in their Team GB branded kit. The athlete, who has not yet been named, is believed to be in shock but was uninjured after being robbed by the gunman.

The Olympics have turned into a vast money-sink for host nations and cities with no tangible benefits to offset the expenditures, but maybe there will one tangible benefit for Rio - maybe the embarrassment of the crime reports they’ve been getting for the past two weeks will finally force their government to confront and start fixing the crime issue there.

Statistically speaking....I think it was Forbes recently who said that Rio was still safer than Compton, California.

...about the only thing the IOC got right about the 2016 Summer Games is that they are not holding them in Chicago!

I have a friend that lives in Brazil and he says Rio is by far the most unsafe place in the country. Crazy to have the Olympics there, IMO.

Having the Olympics in Brasilia might have been a more exotic experience for both participants and spectators alike, but not nearly as photogenic and sexy as the Rio beaches... No Christ the Redeemer, no Sugarloaf Mountain, No Ipanema Beach, No Copacabana, etc...

I suppose they could have split venues, but unfortunately the cities are 580 miles apart...

Actually, there are 21 Brazilian cities with higher murder rates than Rio. Not that Rio is great, but it’s not the most dangerous.
