Lived in California for 30 years, and I have never been to Mexico.
You need not wonder why.
But Mexico is coming to you.
Smart decision. I would never go to Mexico for vacation or business, not for even a few hours.
Why ?
(had to )

Whenever someone tells me they want to go to China, I just tell them to go to Wally World where they have everything Chinese you would want.
At the grocery store last week in Texas suburbs heard Mexican, Chinese, whatever people from India speak, a couple from Syria or Iran speak in their native language and a Black mother yelling at her children in something resembling English. Wondered for a minute if I had just walked into another country.
We used to go to Puerto Vallarta once a year for a few days and play golf. Of course it was probably twenty years ago. Wouldn’t go there for any reason whatsoever any more.
Have visited in Puerto Vallarta 6 or 7 times during cruise ship stops, went shopping on public buses, roamed the beach area, stopped at bars for a drink, and never had a problem. Last visit, saw armed guards walking the cruise terminal. That creeped me out.
Back in the '80s we lived in CA. My liberal sister and her far-Left husband had enough of 'Frisco, came down to Oceanside (50 mi from Mexico) and tried marinating me with all their screwball views. They bought a place in San Felipe, Mexico and RAVED over the place and the "wonderful people" there. They wanted me to buy in. I said "no".
When our family went on vacation, we headed for Canada (1,400 miles) and spent weeks up there touring - never had a problem - and - the people were great, if not "wonderful".
My sister wondered why I'd drive "all that distance" when Mexico was so close. I told her I walked across the border in Tijuana once and it reminded me of 120th St in NYC where we grew up in the '50s. I did a 180 and never went back. She said "Oh, you Conservatives! as SO racist". Horror stories (mostly police graft) from people took their RVs down there said the Gringos had bullseyes on their backs, which only reinforced my "racism".
She gave me flak about that for another couple of years. Then, of a sudden, they sold the place. I asked them if they made a profit and they never said one way or the other and never spoke of the place again. I suspect they had a Reality Check of some kind as they almost got wall-eyed if you mentioned San Felipe. (I'd bring it up on every visit just for brotherly spite. :-) )
