Santa Clara County Sheriff's deputies on Wednesday arrested one suspect at Starbucks and were searching for two more after a laptop robbery reported at Apple.
Sgt. James Jensen identifed the man as Richard Bejarno.
While two of his accomplices remained at large, Bejarno was taken into custody after Apple security notified deputies about a getaway car leaving the corporate building at Bubb Road and Results Way in Cupertino about 4:30 a.m., which they later spotted on Highway 85.
The driver didn't stop and a chase led deputies to San Jose's Cambrian neighborhood, when the car became disabled at Camden Avenue and Lancaster Drive.
All three fled on foot.
Bejarno, however, ran into the Starbucks on Hillsdale Avenue.
Barista Stacy Schildhauer told NBC Bay Area that she saw a man rush into the shop about 5 a.m. and attempt to use the bathroom. But he couldn't get in because there's a security code on the door. He asked her if she would open it, and repeated several times, "I need ice water. Can you please open the door for me."
Just then, deputies entered the cafe and asked him, "Where's your gun? Where are your friends?" Schildhauer recounted after her shift. The deputies tackled him and took him into custody, just before she was about to give him some water.
"You don't expect that at 5 in the morning," she said. "This has got to be up there for crazy mornings."
Schildhauer said she was grateful that the bathroom doors have a security code, otherwise the suspect might still be barricaded in there.
The other suspects, Jensen said, were seen running around near Camden and Leigh avenues. Deputies were searching backyards in the Cambrian district for them, as well as interviewing taxi and ride-sharing drivers to see if they know anything or saw something.
Probably former protestors at Trumps San Jose rally.
Hipster crime. Hilarious. Did he have an Abercrombie and Fitch ski mask?
Was the car stolen or is it registered to one of the fools?
Well for sure if I just robbed an Apple store I’d want a caramel machiado to relax after. Or maybe a double frappe decaf non fat latte venti. Or just a cup a joe.
Probably all he will wear for a while.
It wasn’t an Apple store, it was a corporate building.
Ping
Okay I admit it, you made me laugh...
Now I know what the sirens were at 4:45am this morning in Cambrian...
Hmmmm.... I am living 1/2 mile for the there.
Hope they caught the rest of em....
A friend who lives near there is wondering why an unusually large number of criminals end their car chases there.
Maybe the other two went to Applebee’s.
hahahaa,, I’ve asked myself the same thing..
Oh crap. In that case a double caramel machiado. LOL!
