I think that it ACTUALLY means "My god is greater", which puts an entirely different complexion on the obscenity.

Many think so but "akbar" is both a comparative and a superlative adjective, and in the phrase it should be translated "most great." To the muslims it would be an impiety to suggest that Allah is comparable to any other god, or indeed to anything.
