I think Microsoft has opened the door for a new competitor in the desktop OS space. Between the heavy handed upgrade tactics and the much more highly controlled Windows 10 ecosystem, three will be quite a few people looking for another option when Win 7 support runs out. I know I will be.
The question is, will someone step in to provide a viable alternative.

People say that with every version.
People dont.
Check out Linux operating systems sometime. I’ve been messing around them for about 8 years now and they have come a long ways.
Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora, Zorin are some good flavors of Linux as well as the lighter versions, Lubuntu, Zorin Lite, Linux Lite. It’s just a matter of what desktop environment you like in these. Plus, some come with more programs and features. www.distrowatch.com has all the flavors, features, and downloads of Linux OS’s.
The nice thing is you can download the ISO of any of these and burn it to a disk. Just boot from the disk and run your computer from the live disk (it will be a little slower running it from a CD but you’ll get an idea if you like the desktop environment and features with it). That way you can test how you like it before you think about installing it.
One thing I do like about Linux OS’s is all updates go through one channel so your system file updates, Firefox updates, Google Chrome updates, any program updates come through one update channel which makes it so much easier to keep your machine updated. For everyday normal use, Linux OS’s works great.

Same here. I like my Windows 7 operating system, just as I liked my Windows XP system, and my Win 98 system before that. I'm sick and tired of having to upgrade operating systems, just to keep Microsoft's cash registers humming.
When support for 7 runs out in 2020, I hope there's a user-friendly, comparable OS on the market.
