VW's Cheating Diesels Won't Be U.S.-Emissions Compliant After Recall Fix
R&T ^ | 19 july 2016 | CHRIS PERKINS

The recall fix has still yet to be approved, but increasingly, it looks like the cars affected will never meet U.S emissions standards....

The fix is mainly intended for customers who decide to forgo the option of a buyback or a lease cancellation. For those who bought one of these diesel Volkswagens for environmental reasons, news of a non-emissions-compliant fix makes a buyback a much more appealing proposition.

News of this comes a week after the California Air Resources Board rejected VW's proposed fix for various VW, Audi, and Porsche models equipped with emissions-cheating 3.0-liter V6 diesels. If the company can't work out a satisfactory fix for those cars, it'll potentially face more costly buybacks.

As everyone knows, dumping money into the atmosphere will make it much better!

Try this at home! Place large piles of cash, securities, gold coins... around the house.

See how much better it feels!

I’ve got one of these VW’s.

Great car, averages 43 mpg with roof racks.

I want to keep it, I dont’ need or want any ‘fixes’.

Leave me alone.

Looks like I’ll be keeping my 11 yr old TDIs for a few more years...

I have to get one hopefully before VW fixes it. Up to 50 mpg is nothing to laugh at. It looks like buying one in Kalifornia might be doing someone a perceived favor.

Dealers have been sitting on their stock of 2015s, waiting for a fix to be able to sell them. (I went for a test drive this Spring - the dealers are supposed to exercise them occasionally)

The Cheating Diesels. Sounds like a good name for a Polka band.

I don't know why, but I thought that would be a great name for a band!

GENERALLY speaking, VW's are great cars for the money. Some of the earlier models have electrical problems, especially the bugs, but the Jetta, Passat, Golf, CC, etc., have turbo engines that also offer great gas mileage AND LONGEVITY.

Gotta go FULL synthetic oil!!!! A regular oil and filter change routine every 6-8,000 miles is KEY to getting mega miles on your engine!!

Probably a good time to get a great deal on a VW, with the bad press and all. Doesn’t matter to me, I will hype VW’s to anyone looking for a car.

If you’re planning on driving it forever, agreed.

If you’re not already on there, I’d keep up with things at TDI Club Forums. Those guys have been the go-to source for technical information about VAG diesels since long before this brouhaha. If nothing else, you’ll be well-informed in your decision-making.

They have a manual turbo DI gas engine in a Jetta size station wagon that would be nearly as good as a TDI for higher altitude cities and mountain work.

So how much of the settlement will make its way to Obama cronies?

As part of its settlement, VW will contribute $2.7 billion to fund pollution reduction efforts, and an additional $2 billion towards clean energy programs in an attempt to offset its excess pollution.

Tom Steyer has to be happy.

The older MK4 Jetta's (2000-2004) have 1.8T engines that deliver over 180hp but also get 30ish/mpg on the highway if driven conservatively. IMO one of the best engines available on any vehicle. I think the current 1.4T's are probably just as good and I'd be curious to learn of owner's opinions on those engines.

The Golf's are BADAZZ, TOO!!!

Think of the mileage you’d get by removing those roof racks!

The overly strict EPA regulations are at the root of this problem.

VW transformed the Jetta Wagon into the Golf Wagon, sort of a hybrid of both concepts now.
