Most departments issue IIIA vests. Will stop all pistol calibers. NIJ level III (stand alone rifle) vary in weight from 2.9 lbs (DKX) to 8-10 lbs for AR500 steel. Those weights are per plate, so X2 for front and rear coverage.

Knowing that rifle fire is inbound, wearing IIIa gear, and still running toward the gunfire....

Yes, IIIA is “adequate”, but with so many rifle rounds in circulation, and even rifle-round pistols, it seems IIIA armor is lacking. A cost and convenience issue apparently.

First conversation I had with colleagues was about the need for level IV multistrike armor now. We already have officers dipping into savings to buy both rifles and armor, probably helmets as well.

I half joked about starting a go-fund me. All this while looking at an intel bulletin about the usual suspects attempting to buy two way radios and AR15s at the local big box dealer.
