Sorry to disagree but as a military force they are borderline worthless. Although somewhat ruthless they arent very effective against a trained fighting force. ISIS could be wiped but it will take more than the Foreign Legion.

Part of me was wondering if their justifiably-earned reputation is far more ruthless than they actually are today with all of the PC crap the regulars are getting.

That’s not a position that can be supported by any rational facts. Point us to an FFL failure that backs this up. The fact is, they are extremely competent infantry, as good as any on earth. Airborne, engineers, and MP units. They are almost tailor made for such warfare.
They are about 3 times the size of the USN Seal teams, and come with organic combat engineers and MP units.
And this is not a small unit, it is about the size and capability of the British Royal Marines. You couldn’t be more incorrect about the FFL. They have the ability to lock down Tunisia harder than you think.
And the hard reputation of no mercy is very real for them.
They did well against Al Qaeda fighters in Mali (Operation Serval). ISIS fighters are not any more disciplined or trained than Al Quaeda.
