New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

Is that the kitteh comment for the day?

I don’t know what’s in store for today but I think Lingo lover and I are going some place. Where money is spent. So I will just tag along feeling unnecessary.

Kitteh is feeling Monday even though it’s Thursday. Pat is 15, not sure how that happened.

Either Bill the Cardinal or Mrs. Bill is chip-chipping outside the back door, although it’s still dark.

Its dark here and cold. Without my flannel sheets and heated mattress pad I was pretty cold last night. This morning isn’t any better. I had to put on another layer.

My son just left for work and when he gets off today he doesn’t have to go back until Monday.

I was the first one up and it looks like I’ll be alone for a while.

It was peaceful here for a while, but now DP is up, and I’m going to roust out the Offspring. We have choir later, and the girls are going over to a friend’s house, and I have to go to Walmart, and stuff like that.

I’m really off my game, here. I’m lost without the books I read...

At least I have my Nook. That helps.

Now I have to charge it and have a breathing treatment.

DP’s employer gave him a gigantic new Kindle as a reward for something. Health? Anyway, it’s as big as a large hardback book and weighs nearly as much. I’d go for the book.

I should be getting a smaller version as a Christmas present.

That’s all I need, a library in my pocket.

I would love to have a Kindle the size of a small computer but who can afford that? I’m just happy that I have money for foods and meds. A little spending money is good by I always end up using it for necessities.

You're assuming a ceiling that has a structure that can withstand 1000 pounds at a single connection point.

Funny how a simple word like "secure" can really complicate a plan.

Anyway:

I wonder if he was surprised after his death to find out he was wrong about the cosmos being all there is.

I’m thinking deep down he knew.

Morning, everyone.

Glad Face got to AR OK. (Wait, AR or OK???)

I was out all yesterday helping prepare the final offer that should let me stay on this job for another year or so.

Arkansas. I came into the “Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport.” I don’t think I’ll ever be warm again!

Coming into the “Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport” would leave me cold, too.

How did OK get into the mix?

It’s cold in Oklahoma (which is contiguous with Arkansas), too.

I’ve been to choir practice and had lunch. Now we’re going to the gym. It’s supposed to be 60 here today.

I’m not planning any trips to OK any time soon. Neither am I thinking of sending you there.

I guess I’m just full-blown-gonzo confused.

We (Lingolover,Sam and I) went to Walmart. It’s a lot bigger than the one I go to in Henderson.

I had to get yogurt and rice pudding. And I picked up a Razorback lanyard. I’d like to get something Razorback for Charlie and the peeps. I saw a page of different Razorback stickers that I thought would be good to split but had to wait until I got the food. Then we were done.

I’m sure I won’t be warm until I get back.
