New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

I’m going to be a grandma again! Number four. Hoping for a boy so we’ll have some symmetry among the offspring. Two of each would be nice and would greatly assist in the living arrangements.

Congratulations!

The only kid I have even dating is dating a man I wouldn’t want to be related to so I’m not in a hurry to hear any grandkid news.

Actually, it’s somewhere nearer to old age...

I just got back from a meeting at the club house, and like every other meeting I’ve ever been to up there, the idiots had the floor. After the fifth one, and the shouting match he started, I left. I can’t handle that kind of thing.

CFIDS is at work. *sigh* I really do need to cool down somewhat. My friend, LuDean just texted me to ask if I were coming back for the RAD meeting, and I’m just not in the mood for that. This one is about the move and the stuff that the “architects” are contemplating.

If I could have held out, I would have asked how far in advance they would pay for the move. That’s all I need to know. LuDean said she would ask, so I’m good.

I’m so rattled that I put the time in the cupboard when I put the meat in the toaster oven... *sheesh*

Still, the OCD person in me doesn’t like to make spelling mistrakes, especially on the interwebs.
