New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

Awww... floof.

I don’t want to be up, but it would seem my body is ignoring me, so here I am.

I fell asleep around 1830 and with the exception of a number of trips to the euphemism, I slept most of the night, with lots of dreams to entertain me.

Now I need to go get the clothes out of the bathroom and put them away, and the rest of the day will take care of itself.

The “goggles” are Electrical-Metallic-Tubing (EMT) connectors, tube to electrical box. Clever usage!

I’m annoyed this morning by inanimate objects, and would like to take one in particular and toss it in the dumpster. However, I will, instead, get some modeling clay and make a minor repair to it until a replacement part arrives. Hopefully, it will be before the next time I wash clothes. That gives them two weeks to exhibit their splendid customer service. :o|

I have so many animate objects that it’s hard to be too angry at the inanimate ... although I’m getting pretty enraged with the coffee maker, which is showing a “Clean Me” light even after I cleaned it.

I blame engineers.

"I blame engineers."

DP should be already aware that you have a simmering rage against incompetent engineers. That is undoubtedly why he treads cautiously around you.

I don’t think they’re incompetent: I think they’re actively out to drive normal people into blithering catatonia. BWahahahahahaha!

Since I only make coffee two to three times a week, I run vinegar through the machine once a month, just in case there is some mold growing in the water that’s left in the reservoir. And since it’s a Keurig, it only holds water, not coffee. One of the things I like about it. :o]

It boils, so it sterilizes before it brews. Also, spores are good for us.

I wholeheartedly agree!

Except that the spores here are particularly nasty, not only to inhale (causing grave illnesses) but taste positively disgusting when mixed with coffee. And they can then go on to cause other illnesses...

Bill got the light to go off, proving the superior utility of business-persons over engineers. The coffee pot is still usable, proving the superior utility (at least in this case) of business-persons over bears, such as Tom, who would have broken it.

Tom doesn’t have class today, so he’s off with one of his friends who is home from college. Sure is peaceful ...

LOL!

Well, I do declare! Certain things are best left to business persons and certain other things should be the bailiwick of the bears of the world. They all have their places, and in this case, oddly, in the same family.

Laurel and Hardy come to mind... ;o]

ArGee ~ "And why isn’t onomatopoeia spelled the way it sounds?"

NicknamedBob ~ 'Cause nobody knows how to pronounce it, and therefore nobody knows what it should sound like.

Until they hear it, and then it's too late...
