New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

That’s it, I think, but it seems there were two or three more stages, since it came from the aerospace engineers.

Thanks, Nully! It’s funny! Alaways.

Morning TC,
Somehow the Sun is shining and I’ve ended up at Bourton on the Water in Gloucestershire.
The place is heaving with tourists, good for business. :)

Thanks, Bob. I think.

I promised me when I was a teen to never allow myself to get pulled down, pushed down or dragged down, but would always find the beauty in mud, grass, gravel and pavement if that’s what I was faced with.

End of sermon.

The sourdough is doing better than I expected, but I will refrigerate it today. Maybe by Saturday, I will make something out of it. ;o]

Bourton-on-the-Water is a village and civil parish in Gloucestershire, England that lies on a wide flat vale within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Looks charming, in a flat way.

I see that it's just to the south of Lower Slaughter. Tom should live there ...

I’ve seen some of those battered animals close up, and the one thing they all have in common is that if they choose to trust you, they are the. most. loving. of all pets.

Fluffy little squee!

Good morning! I used to make Sourdough Cinnamon Rolls for the Knights of Columbus in Norman.

It’s cooler here today.

And now, for my next trick, I will take a shower, so if one is missing, you’ll know where it went.

(It’s cold in here. Seventy-six degrees.)

73.5 in here. The kids are whining that they’re freezing! Wait until we have lows in the 40s and I leave all the windows open at night ;-).

I’ll give Santana another bath today, but Jack and Baby can do without unless they get unusually icky.

He can drive a tractor, and by the end of the semester he’ll be able to repair a tractor.

Done with the shower, so at least I look clean. How do I smell? (Mother’s joke...)

I ordered some castile shampoo from iherb this last time, and it’s not at all like the castile I used when I was growing up. (That’s all my mother ever bought.) This smells almost medicated, and the bottle says to “shake well before using.” There is no room in that tiny bathroom to shake even slightly; maybe I could tremble a little....

Merely asking the question indicates you are not a loyal subject.

All too true. Sooner or later they're going to figure out I've hijacked the Levinworth guest wi-fi and cut me off for good.

Merely asking the question indicates you are not a loyal subject.

Was it Solzhenitsyn who said that one of the worst features of totalitarianism is that one is required to act as if absolute absurdities are true? (I will not relate this point specifically to the reason Anoreth was banned, because I might be next ...)

And as things move along, one is first forbidden to use the words needed to describe reality accurately ("Islamic terrorism") and then deprived of the words to formulate thoughts as well as the logic to evaluate.

See tagline.

I ain’t sayin’ how long ago that was.
