Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.
Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)
"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."
...
The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).
The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).
"There it was on the screen this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

Could we some Aussie great white laser sharks just for sport?
That’s exactly what I was going to say!
Would you trust a man who spent all those years in Congress and didn't get rich?
Tough question.
I was in one of the burgs this weekend. Not cold, but definitely chilly in the early hours.
Cool. I lived in Boiling Springs, PA for a while. In the valley, though, not he mountains.
Calling it a one-horse town would give it delusions of grandeur.
Not to mention Paris, Texas.
I’m sure the French have never lived that one down.
“Aussie great white laser sharks just for sport?”
The native seal population might object.
Living on an island, the last thing you want to do is remove the seals.....
Thought I'd best check before I opened my cake hole:
"First, the Radiator Springs shown in Cars is a fictional town. Historic Route 66 exists. On the real Route 66, there is a Baxter Springs in Kansas and a Peach Springs in Arizona. But Radiator Springs does not exist, except in the imaginations of Pixar's artists and writers."
Now that my laundry is all done, I can devote some time to my FRiends. :o]
Next week, it’s clothes.
After I was done with them last week and had them all hanging up to dry, I was sitting here and THIS went through my mind very painfully:
Since I have a key, I normally open at 0600. On laundry days, I open it long enough for me to get into the laundry room, then lock it behind me, and be done, well before 0600.
There are four washers and four dryers. One of the washers is a front-loader which I never use. That leaves three machines.
It finally dawn on me that since I DO open so early on my laundry day, I CAN use the three top-loaders and not worry about someone coming in and complaining.
THAT was a real face palm for sure.
Next week...three machines!
Is that dirt on the little “nu-nu” or natural coloring?
Such a sweet little guy!
Couldn’t we have just of few of them only in the chunnel?
I think the sharks would relish the watery hamster habitat, cafeteria style dining.
I think that’s his nose.
Riding the train through shark-infested seas would definitely add interest to the trip.
Maybe we’ll go to the library. Some of my reserve books are finally ready.
It’s such a weird experience anyway, a few extra sharks could enliven the experience.
“Mum, where are we?”
“Under the channel “
“Oh, so what’s that?”
“Just an Australian laser armed Shark, dear. Nothing to worry about.”
When I was about 9, we visited friends in the San Franscisco area and took the train that went under the bay. I was disappointed that we weren’t going through the water!
See, boring without laser sharks dining.
Open topped observation cars at 125 mph through the warm waters of San Franscisco bay......
I’m liking the sound of this.
Some form of plastic tunnel roof may be required.
:)
Beautiful!
