Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.
Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)
"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."
...
The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).
The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).
"There it was on the screen this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

Sounds like a job for a 150Grain Coy-o-Tay repellent device.
Evening, Moose. I was hoping I was done for the day, but Sally decided she wants to go to the church youth group tonight. They’re going to make pizza from scratch.
knew you were on holiday, so no problem.
I’d only read about the large scale Euro and Japanese kits long after I stopped doing my 1/24 scale model customizing, soldered brass roll cages, jewelers screws and nuts on working steering and wheels. Got a ribbon once in the local car show. Cast many a covetous glance at those terrific metal kits.
My dad was in a local DC area box store going out of business. They had an assembled plastic black and yellow Bugatti coupe display model almost 2 feet long. Workking doors, latches, wind down windows, working steering and suspension, etc. Beautiful, just beautiful. He offered $50 for it, even though it hadn’t been tagged for sale-—sold to the gentleman with the green...kit would have been about $400 IIRC
Neat.
I love the ones here. This one has grown exponentially since its inception about 12 years ago. And of course, the last time I went was with He Who Shall Not Be Named, the day after we went to the Barett-Jackson auction and show. It was actually too much for both of us so close together, but it was his call.
At any rate, I will have access to car shows in St G, and will also be about an hour away from the Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City. THAT is something I’m really looking forward to!
And I’m also looking forward to lying down. The barometer is dropping, and that makes for difficult movements. Tomorrow is laundry day, and I was up at 0320 this morning, just because that’s when my eyes opened. I caught the 40 minutes remaining of “Luther,” and watched most of “New Tricks,” then went in to take my shower.
Zeke, the resident Liberal, had already opened the clubhouse when I got there, and caught me when I came in. He wanted me to please make a sign, asking for “volunteers” to watch the debates tomorrow night and then to have a “discussion” in the clubhouse afterward.
I did a mental facepalm while I was composing it, wondering how he was going to keep the residents from smacking each other. One thing is for sure: I won’t watch the debates, and I won’t discuss them. I’ll wait for the re-caps on FR, and thank my lucky stars that I wasn’t involved!
The late Igor bought a model kit of a Duesenberg just before he went to Saudi to teach the Royal Saudi Air Force electronics and English. He paid $110 for it (1977) but that and my foot locker never made it back out of the Kingdom.
It had brass parts, rubber wheels and a very intricate engine block and parts. It took him over six months to assemble it.
He never even sent me a photo of it! (Gr-r-r-rrrrr.)
Beautiful! I love model kits! Me and my Adult ADD!
I’d heard about that kit...was it the one in which you could crank over the engine?
Evening TC.
Pizza from scratch.....that is going to get real messy real fast.
How they keep the dough on their fingers and spin it is just impressive to watch.
A nice little find. :)
Was it constructed?
Yes, it was a factory assembled sales display model showing the completed kit to lure big pieces of green paper from the wallets of the google-eyed customers.
IIRC, Pocher was the first mfr of the highly detailed 1/8th scale auto models to also seek a broader market than just hobby shop geeks like me. ;>)
Yes, I’ve seen that done. It will be interesting to hear what the church youth accomplished, pizza-wise.
LOL - I expect debate-watching would have a similar result in Mom's apartment building. I haven't heard anything, so I guess she and the other Airline Old Girls arrived safely in Paris. Tomorrow they will be begin to cruise down the Seine.
We have Cub Scouts and stuff tomorrow, and when we get home, we'll go to bed.
Anoreth was imbibing last night and baiting Trump sycophants and got herself suspended. I told her to use her newly copious spare time to email her grandmother.
One yutz posted that Trump was the closest thing to George Washington that he’d ever seen, and Anoreth says (she texted me) that she PMed to him, “Yeah, I remember when he bravely had himself driven over the Delaware Toll Bridge in his Rolls Royce limousine. That was awesome!”
I’m surprised nobody reported me: I was pretty snarky, too.
Oops, I meant to mail that. Hopefully nobody will notice.
The only thing I noticed was that your spelling was correct and your grammar was suitable. You’ve slipped occasionally lately, but this was good.
Sometimes I stop drinking for weeks at a time, you know. But presently, my fingernails have gotten so long that I’m missing keystrokes.
And how are you? It’s unseasonably hot here.
So, some guy just wanders in on Sunday evening and nabs post 3800 without even working for it?
What a cruel world.
