New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

Your productivity is impressive, ‘Face!

Jack has gained weight and has a much healthier color than he did when he moved here. He’s excitable, though. Given his age (between 2 and 3), he’ll probably crawl under a rock and rest all winter.

Thanks, but the productivity comes in leaps and spurts and not as often as I would like it to.

Right now, I’m very tired, but that could be because I didn’t sleep well last night. The last thing I want to do is cook the pizzas and take them out to the ramada, with the attending plates, cups, napkins, etc. I’m still asking myself how I got roped into this... :o|

And so, it begins...

Stress is defined as that state where you mind is screaming “NO WAY, JOSE! NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS!!” while your mind calmly says, “yes.”

iPads are very water resistant, but today was way too wet to risk getting it out of its case.
Maybe tomorrow there will be gaps in the scotch mist. :)
The fungi are coming up in the woods and the trees are thinking about autumn. The chestnuts are falling, and it has to be said they are very sweet this year.

Lol! That should keep you busy while it rains.

Speaking of rain, it was pouring when we got to the stable for Kathleen’s lesson, but by the time we had the horse thoroughly groomed, the rain had stopped. So she didn’t ride as long as usual, but helping with the horse is good, too.

While she was riding, Sally and I groomed a second horse.

Yes. The stress definition would be me.

The entire collection (Vol 1 & 2) of Far Side??? Oh. My. Stars!

I forgot how nice it was to groom a horse. I’m envious.

The “party” is still going on, but I just couldn’t stay. Chuck was surprised, and somewhat tickled that we would do something like this for him. And quite a few people showed up, actually. I cooked three of the four pizzas, and Chuck can take them home. They were all still drinking the beer, so “a good all was had by fun.” Or something.

And I’m asking me, “Is it bedtime, yet?”

Tomorrow, I will swap out the summer clothes for the winter ones. Tomorrow will only get up to 86, and lower temps are coming. So I’m trying to recall which tub has the blankets in it. :o|

Ok then... must be the pub in Upperthong Holmfirth where the first Welly Wanging occurred, which grew to become the center of the World Championship Welly Wanging contest.

Either that or Douglas Adams’ home.

You got me. Was there a murder?

It rained here. I’m having to recalibrate my plan for Cub Scouts in case we can’t go outside. The forecast says it’ll be clearing by 7:00 p.m.

Grooming a horse has advantages over scrubbing a dragon with a toothbrush.

This last reference threw me completely out of the game. Haven’t clue one.

Though, I did discover Upperthong and Netherthong, as well as the Thongsbridge. Bawdy place, Yorkshire.

Alas no murder to reference.
The Door was used in Last of the Summer Wine.
It’s Nora Batty’s front door in Holmfirth.
The town is full of locations used during the 30 odd years+- of the series.

It’s supposed to rain this evening, and the barometer confirms that. The water is WAY UP the spout! No wonder I feel depressed and lethargic.
