New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

Oh! LOOK! A pluppy kitteh!

Monday is my youngest grandson’s birthday, and I forgot to get him a card. He’s a relatively “new” grandson, having graced my life when his mother married my son, so I’m not even five years used to it.

I hope I have enough to go get him a card this morning and get it in the mail. Dang, That’s embarrassing.

Anywhere in the same month is close enough for our family, except for Mom, who is very strict about on-time birthday greetings. This sometimes results in same-day floral orders!

The Avalon wouldn’t start this morning. DP took Tom to school (it’s in the area of his office), and Bill will take Elen a little later. That leaves me to get the car taken care of. We think it’s the starter; it was acting a little funny on Monday.

If he weren’t such a new addition, I would agree with you, but I try not to be late with James’ BD greetings, so I don’t want to be late with Sam’s. Been there, done that. The receiving end of late or non-existent BD greetings is really and ego-deflating thing.

I don’t have any money for him, but I will go to Walmart and get a card for him. While I cuss myself out.

The classic trouble-shooting technique is to turn on the headlights, then try to start it.

If you have no headlights, you have battery issues.

If the starter won’t engage, you have starter issues.

If the starter tries to engage, but the headlights dim, it could be a combination.

I will be excited when they find the DOH-on and figure out how to smash it.

Good morning,
Currently sat on the beach at Ravenscar.
The birds are loving the rock pools as the tide withdraws.

Wish I was on the beach at Ravenscar admiring the avian fauna!

I got the car to start by speaking nicely to it and invoking my Higher Power and took it to the mechanic. Meanwhile, Bill the Other Son (who got his college diploma yesterday!) took Elen to school. Contemporaneously, I walked over to Walmart, after phoning home to have Vlad the Further Additional Son read the shopping list to me.

Bill picked me up at Walmart. The mechanic texted to say he’ll replace the starter, for a substantial fee, and have the car working by mid-afternoon. DP texted to say he’d pick Tom up after diesel lab and bring him home. Someone will get Elen at some point.

Next thing is to take Sally to her eye doctor appointment, departing at 10:15.

Did I mention I’d rather be at the beach in Yorkshire?

I want to be on permanent vacation in the British Isles, just so I can take my time looking at all the places my ancestors haunted. (Haunt.)

I went out to throw some stuff in the Dumpster and half of the split lid was over the Dumpster, while the other half was all the way down. Folks here don’t know enough to throw their garbage bags sideways to fill up both sides (liberals all) so I flipped the lid again, and this time, I cut my upper arm.

Me on baby aspirin and having fragile skin has left a mark that is hard to bandage. And hard to work with one-handed. But I will LIVE!

:o|

Charlie gave me a $2 bill yesterday, so it’s going to my grandson.

I was out in the ramada yesterday, having forgotten that since Friday was payday, Charlie would be on the shuttle bus yesterday, running his errands. So I breathes in a lot of gas fumes and grass and weed dander, and really had a tough time last night. Two breathing treatments later, I was able to sleep. Remind me not to do that again, please?

Don’t do that again. Don’t sit out when it’s Epic Fail Latino Lawn Service Day. I wonder how you say Epic Fail in Spanish.
