New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

Jerry Doyle, the recently deceased actor and radio host, said he wanted to die with nothing but the clothes he stood up in, with overdue bills in the pockets.

We’re having some tidying-up and some school here, and we’ll leave for Weight Watchers at 8:50, followed by a slew of other stuff.

I wore my ear-warmer when I went out for my constitutional at 5:30, but it was plenty warm aside from ears. My neighbor was out walking his geriatric Doberman, who had to stop and sniff at each mailbox and light pole. Reminded me of “exercise” with the late Ash. “Stop here ... and here ... and here ... now go back over there ...”.

The trees around the church make it look like a good place for a murder.

While I was getting gas this morning, two diesel pickup trucks hauling boats on trailers pulled in. One truck and boat were from Bass Pro Shops, and the other pair were from the US Marines Corps.

I did the best imitation of a salute I could muster with a pump hose in the tank, and thanked the off-duty Marine for his service. There must have been a big get together at the lake this weekend. It would have been fun to read the stats or watch it on the computer.

Some sort of professional fishing thing, perhaps. The military is sometimes involved as sponsors: people interested in fishing tend to be the type the military wants to recruit.

If you do the civillian salute it’s easier.

Right-hand over your heart.

From the looks of the boats, I’d say it was racing. Lake Mead has a lot of that. We even get the big hydro-racing boats here, like the infamous Miss Budweiser.

I love races, and about the only time I draw the line is the off-road endurance races. Otherwise, it’s all good.

Actually, both hands were full, so I nodded to him as I thanked him. He was surprised. ;o]

My son and his family got back from Baton Rouge (three weekends in a row) and had to buy a new dryer. My son, ever the optimist, said, “At least we didn’t have to buy a new house, [like most of the people we helped].”

He took pics and showed streets that were bordered by piles of debris. He goes to help whenever it’s in driving range for a weekend. Tornadoes, hurricanes, floods...

He used to volunteer in the local hospital in the pediatrics ward, but got too burned out on it.

It was the practice to entomb royalty in sealed lead sheets.

A metal container was viewed as method of preservation and a way of preventing critters from defiling the body.

Soooo...

Do you have Prince Albert in a can?
