Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.
Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)
"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."
...
The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).
The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).
"There it was on the screen this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

My little old aunt really did move a rubber tree plant...
Ugh. Still need to peel the bathrooms. Two rooms mostly painted.
Ugh. Keep telling yourself how nice it will look when you’re finished.
We do!
Passed a psychological turning point yesterday, it feels like we’re on the final stretch.
Also, the handyman showed up after we’d thrown in the towel for the day.
Excellent!
You should try to get some sleep, too.
Sleep? I hardly know the meaning of the word!
I figured that when you replied at 2:00 a.m.!
Awww....floofy squee! I heart that!
W00T!
Well, Nully, at least you’re among the living.
You will have to take pics and show us the finished product. Or maybe just me, because I like to see such things...
Good morning! If we can’t be cats, we might as well get up and get going on the day.
I woke up at 0330 and that was it. I wasn’t sleeping well to begin with. I was having what I call “transparent” dreams all night: where I feel like I’m a awake but watching the dreams from a distance.
Not very restful.
I had to use the bathroom a little before 5:00, and after that there was no point in going back to bed ... not after I’d brought my clothes and shoes downstairs so I could walk before breakfast.
Kathleen just found my pajamas in the living room.
Oh, wow...I just heard our new weather prognosticator refer to Utah as “Uteh.” HAR!
I’m off to have a breathing treatment.
Cutie!
Morning!
Back from church. After lunch, going out again.
When I walked up to the clubhouse to open it, I realized how dizzy I am, and I’ve decided that church is not a good idea at the moment. It’s probably from the lack of good sleep, but I don’t think I’d better drive, even though it’s not very far.
*sigh*
I think I would like to get another epidural on my neck before I move to Utah. I’m not going to have the surgery here. There isn’t time to heal, and I don’t like the doctor who would be doing it.
Good morning! Trying to get my butt in gear for church.
Good day,
Wheels down in the Ancient city Of York.
No sign of last winter’s flooding.
