New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

The dream I had just before I woke up was REALLY weird. So weird in fact, I won’t even write about it.

Still, the dreams I do remember, I pay attention to because one never knows when they will be prophetic.

Thanks. Put me on the pinglist I'd appreciate that.

I'll also see if I can direct more of the nuts that emailed me to FR so you and the kitties can have some fun...

BTW, is there an archive of previous Undead threads? I'd like to read them all maybe do an article about it on my blog.

Yes, Oh King of Sarcasm. Much weirder. I slept on flannel sheets in numerous beds with a variety of children, who were also dressed in flannel pj’s, and who moved and changed places with other children, similarly clad, who ALL decided (no doubt by ESP) to wet the bed at the same time.

I was pushed out of the last bed by them just before the wetting began.

And then, thankfully, I woke up, shuddered, and started my day. Ice water, first!

You are on my ping list as we speak. Darks will add you at a later time, as he is pretty busy these days.

Yes, there is an archive. Nicknamedbob has it on his home page, so you can see the progress (or lack of same) of the thread over the years. Twelve years, I believe, it has been floating around. :o]

It is a LONG read, for sure, and if you do decide to do an article on your blog, I would appreciate a ping to it. At which time, I will ping the other UTers, so we can all enjoy! (What an honor for the UT!)

... your house can be considered free of the threat of basilisks.

What a relief!

Back from the Outdoorsiness Adventure. We saw fish. While we were gone from home, *someone* killed three rabbits and ate their heads off.

We assume it was Jake, who is lying on my bed looking completely guileless, but it might have been Shannon; she occasionally has an overwhelming urge to Cat. The alternatives (Sally and Bill) are less acceptable.

Wow. Poor bunnehs. Maybe said cat used the heads as balls to play with.

I sat out with the peeps for a while, and now, I want something to eat. I just don’t know what. My stomach has been pretty sensitive, so I’m a little leery about anything but dairy stuff.

Do you want French fries?

I cleaned some more things. Shannon is annoyed with me. She liked everything where it was. I still have to get some things off shelves in my closet to see what they are. This will require a chair.

I put some Anoreth Artworks up in the closet, now that it’s so tidy, including her “Ragnarok” and “Beowulf and the Dragon.”

Yes, I want French fries, but they aren’t on my list of things to get; maybe I can put them on my growing list of groceries to get on payday. I can buy a big bag of them and freeze them when I want a snack! Thanks for the great idea!

I’m going to retire early today. I’ve had the worst day, for some reason. I slept in to after 0500, and I don’t like to do that, but I guess I needed it.

It was Epic Fail Latino Lawn Service today, and they got a bigger mower, but still can’t seem to finish the job before eight hours are up. Still, the bigger mower helped at least one of the guys — he didn’t have to make so many trips back and forth across the lawns!

Hope you have a good night. Tom suggested that Jake is responsible for both the three dead rabbits and the disappearance of half a bag of frozen mixed vegetables. It’s as good an explanation as any.

New people from Up North are moving in next door (on the corner). They brought a snow shovel!
