Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.
Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)
"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."
...
The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).
The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).
"There it was on the screen this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

Congratulations! I’m home from the riding lesson and getting some lunch. Maybe we’ll go to the pool after lunch. Maybe I’ll go to Walmart. Maybe I’ll go to sleep.
I need to go walk around a bit, and then go sit with the peeps. LuDean is back from her visit to Alabama (family reunion) so she should be out there today, regaling us with her escapades. Or lack of same.
I called my other brother about 20 minutes ago, and he sounds a lot better than he did the last time we talked. I was glad to hear the difference.
It’s still mostly overcast, but the temperature isn’t too bad. It’s just awfully humid.
I’ll go to Walmart in the morning, but I would like to ride a horse for the trip. ;o]
The door to the clubhouse is a real challenge for me to open, but I hope I have the right procedure for it. The key turns one way, and the door opens, and then the tension bar on the inside needs to be held down, and the key needs to turn the other way to fully unlock it so it doesn’t lock when it’s closed. *sigh* My blonde roots keep showing...I have a hard time getting the key to turn the other way.
A nap sounds good!
Aliens took one look at my brain and decided earth wasn’t worth attacking.
Reminds me of the doors to the church. On Monday, I had to leave my key with the Boy Scout leaders because I couldn’t figure out how to re-lock it.
Learn to live without it or hire someone!
What you ladies need are these:
Wonder Woman socks complete with non-regulation cape.
LOL!
Quite right too. :D
Reading that makes it sound as if you’ve been looking for a new Car over ‘ere recently.
You thing you’ve found something and ....boom, major defect!
Nope. I think it’s a universal issue. It even applies to shopping for doctors.
One day I’ll formalize the entire list.
#1: If you absolutely love it your spouse will absolutely hate it.
Oh, yes! I really need those! I was such a total fan of Wonder Woman Comics! I had to buy every one of them. But they disappeared when I had to leave home.
But the socks would be perfect! <3
Wellnow. I went out to sit with the peeps and Chuck ordered pizza from Pizza Hut and had a 12-pack of beer in his fridge.
He brought out cups, plates and paper towels and we sat around for a while and ate “feetza” and drank beer.
It’s the first time I’d had any alcohol in several weeks, and had not had beer in four months. It will be a longer time before I have it again. It was a fun couple of hours, but I had to leave.
The mail carrier brought me a letter from NC, and it had a pretty little “Mexicana” crocheted cross in it! The “odd” thing about it is that it’s like the one that was in one of the Bibles Richard gave me, and I was thinking of making one for a dear friend of mine. But in orange...
:o])
And I am STUFFED! *sheesh*
A stuffed FReeper is a happy FReeper.
Good for the USPS! I got the cross from a vendor at the 4th of July festivities.
If you had sent it media mail, I would have worried! LOL!
*tagline*
