Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.
Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)
"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."
...
The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).
The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).
"There it was on the screen this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

Well, I knew she was young, but never to young to learn to clean up after themselves.
Playing with knives, on the other hand...
Good morning! I encourage all young persons to clean up after themselves. Unfortunately, they know I’ll do it ...
I’m going to yoga this morning and singing at a wedding in the afternoon.
My I be the first to present, tah-dah!
Once you get the Fithp to surrender to your own as the superior herd that is...
Dang, that was a long read, getting to this point, and I feel like I’ve put in a full day already...
For lack of anything else to watch, I’m “listening” to the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. It’s probably all I will see of it except for small news clips. Unless I’m up in the night again.
I hate waking up at 0330 on weekends. Oh, well...maybe I’ll do some more photo scanning this morning. I need to get rid of this pile of photos on my desk so I can have some room. I figure an hour should put a good sized dent it in, anyway.
Once again, I’m anxious to get moved to St. George. Just out of curiosity, I think I’ll check the cost of a rental truck.
Apocalyptopus!
LOL!
Good idea! It'll have to be done sometime, so why not now?
The prices will undoubtedly go up in the spring, but at least I will have an idea of how much it will cost.
Right now, February 2 is the latest it shows, but a 16’ truck is $106, and I couldn’t find the cost of a car hauler.
BUT! If I bring it back to Vegas, it will cost $30, and I won’t need a car hauler. I can take up the truck and the furniture, stay overnight and bring the truck back and drive the car up. Which is the most logical thing to do, of course, since I don’t want to spend more than I have to .
OK. I’ll have to do it the expensive way. It’s $30 for either Budget or UHaul, for local, but the former charges .76 cents a mile and the latter charges .99 cents a mile. One way is more expensive up front, but cheaper with unlimited mileage. And insurance still has to be included.
But it’s $49 for a tow dolly with Uhaul, and Budget doesn’t give a price. Anyway, the former is almost $200. I’m thinking about $150 +/- for Budget.
And there you have it. My brane is taxed.
Just don’t put them in solitary.
Hahahaha!
Morning, Nully!
At least you have a vague idea. Maybe you can get someone to drive the truck up and back for you, while you just take your car.
I figured it out, and just using the truck “locally” with the charge for mileage, puts it at well over $200 and it will be about $150 if I take it and drop it off at St. George. That’s with the tow dolly. Without, of course, it’s $100 +/-
That $50 may come in handy before the move is finished. If I could find someone to drive the truck, I could follow in the car, but that would cause two people a lot of jockeying their schedules. Then there would be three vehicles in the caravan, no matter which way I figure it.
But I have at least six months to get it all figured out, so I’m not going to worry too much about it at the moment.
My mouse has stopped working, and we’re out of AA batteries. I think that’s a sign that I should spend the next hour cleaning! Elen texted and said she’s bringing home another dragon.
Back in the day, mice were connected to the computer with wires.
How the mice were able to power the computer I cannot explain.
Lions, being cats, are not sleeping at night anyway. Having superior vision, hunting at night is a great deal more efficient for them.
The dozy, yawning lions you see in the daylight are sleeping off a big meal.
A large Male lion I took a picture of in Botswana turned out to be an Elephant Killer. Looked so peaceful and cuddly snoozing under that bush.
