Tourists plunge to their deaths in Peru while trying to take photos

Two travelers reportedly died in different instances in Peru recently while standing too close to the cliff ledge when posing for a photo. Last week, a 51-year-old man died when losing his balance at the edge of a cliff at Machu Picchu, in an area closed off to the public. He fell 130 feet. Prior to that, a South Korean tourist fell in northern Peru while taking a selfie at the Gocta waterfall, one of the tallest waterfalls in the world. He plunged more than 1,600 feet.

There have been dozens of deaths related to tourists taking selfies in recent years, according to Condé Nast research. Last year, Condé Nast Traveler pointed out that the selfie now claims more lives than shark attacks -- and that’s just the widely-reported cases involving tourism.

There is now an entire Wikipedia page devoted to selfie-related injuries and deaths. The latter ranging from a 21-year-old Spanish man who was electrocuted in March 2014 after climbing on top of a train to take a selfie with friends, to a Japanese tourist who died last August by injuries sustained when falling down a staircase while taking a selfie at the Taj Mahal. In 2016, numerous people have died falling off cliffs or drowning while attempting to take photos.

Selfie photos taken too close to wildlife have become a danger as well, leading to the temporary shut down of Colorado's Waterton Canyon last August.

I have sympathy for the people who have to go all the way down to the mountain base in order to recover and transport the bodies

Me too. A real eye opener of a book is Over the Edge--Death in the Grand Canyon and what the rangers have to go through after some tourist fools around and ignores barricades along on the rim of canyon.

Wow, that kid was way too close to the tracks/train. Just looking at the image, the pants leg of the boot owner is tucked behind a part of the train just inches above the ankle. That means the kid couldn’t have been more than about a half a foot (snicker) away from the train itself, given that the majority of the foot is smacking him in the head.

Tip: Selfies near train tracks? Bad idea.

"No."

“ignores barricades along on the rim of canyon.”
Um... a LOT of the rim has no ‘barricade’. And tens of thousands a year hang over the edges over of them. Go check it sometime. It is wall to wall selfies.

Maybe the place should be renamed the “Gotcha” waterfall?

How sad.

You can easily purchase, at no risk to life or limb, an excellent photograph of most scenic attractions.

The photo seen above is the result of one such foolish act....One school going youngster wanted to have a high profile, imposing photograph of his...For that, any background scenario on the ground would have been quite fine and enough...But this guy had different ideas...

Last week, a very pathetic incident occurred...This guy clambered on top of a goods train stationed in Shoranur railway station...Whether no one has seen this boy climbing up..? No information...

High Voltage electric power lines which carry 25000 volts pass through most of the length and breadth of the railway routes in Kerala and elsewhere....Shoranur is no different....Above the parked goods train also was a 25 KV power line...The boy after reaching the top of the train, posed himself for a good photograph...In that process, the boy might not have noticed the over head power line or was not aware of the danger this line can cause...

To cut the story short, during his act of snap taking, he came into contact with the live wire and immediately, he was thrown off the train and he fell down away from the railway tracks due to electric shock....He was not electrocuted on the spot....But he was burnt very severely....Some good Samaritans got him admitted in a local hospital and due to the severity of his burns he was later shifted to the medical college....But he could not be saved...He succumbed to the severe burns he suffered during the process of his "adventurous photo session..."

Yes, I know, I have been there several times. I just mentioned the parts of the book where there is a stone wall or barricade.

At one time, flagpole sitting was the “selfie” of a bygone
era. It was considered the “bees knees” back then and
dangerous as all get out. I hope the “selfie” craze dies
a natural death before any more goofballs are killed with
this asinine pastime. By then, the flagpole thing could very
well stage a comeback unless they come up with some other
hairbrained idea. It is the product of a society of total
narcissists; Democrats, Hitler-y voters.
