Arthur Brooks showed up in Coeur dAlene this weekend ready to find a suitable mate for his son, Salt Lake City businessman Baron Brooks, and left with around a dozen prospects.
The thoroughbred horse breeder from California made headlines around the world last week after he bought a full-page newspaper ad inviting women to interview for a chance to meet and possibly marry his son.
Baron Brooks, 48, said he had no idea what his 78-year-old father was up to and reacted with shock and embarrassment when he learned about the Looking for a wife ad seeking a conservative woman ready, willing and able to have children as soon as possible.
It was so shocking that I wasnt even sure what I was reading, even though I read it twice, he said. I thought it was a joke at first.
He described his father as nuts, neurotic and knowing no boundaries. But he let the elder Brooks go ahead with his plan to contact and interview candidates at the Coeur dAlene Resort this weekend.
Baron Brooks said Sunday that resort management asked his father not to conduct the interviews there after all, following a wave of news and social media coverage of the audacious plot. But Arthur Brooks still gathered the names of about 12 women who expressed interest in the ad, published June 18 in the Coeur dAlene Press, and he plans to interview them in the next few weeks.
I think maybe one of them was local, but almost all of them were from all over the United States, and even some international, Baron Brooks said Sunday. But he has a file and hes contacting them.
Brooks, who owns two health food stores, said he doesnt need his fathers help finding dates. But he also doesnt want to thwart his fathers efforts, noting that his dad has health problems and really wants a grandson to carry on the family name.
I said if its truly legitimate and wasnt some crackpot, and I got to see their photo first and I had an attraction, yeah, I would go through with it, just so feelings would not be hurt, Baron Brooks said.
After fielding calls from potential daughters-in-law, Arthur Brooks flew Saturday to Salt Lake City and met with his son. The two appeared together Sunday morning on Fox and Friends to talk about the entire episode. The father said hes been to Coeur dAlene many times, and that he placed the $900 ad on a recent visit and included a photo of his smiling son.
I was there with my lady friend a few weeks back and I thought that this would be a good idea, Arthur Brooks said in the TV interview.
Oh, naturally, his son interjected.
Arthur Brooks continued, I thought maybe I would get five or six ladies, hopefully, in Coeur dAlene who would be interested.
The matchmaking story was picked up by newspapers, magazines, TV stations and websites across the country. It even appeared in The Times of Israel and the New Zealand Herald.
Baron Brooks said the phones have been ringing nonstop at his stores in the week since the story broke.
It was literally out of control, he said. I had to stop everything and take the week off because it was so out of hand.
Everywhere he goes, people recognize him and want to talk about the ad, Brooks said.
He also said he forgave his father, who has returned home to Beverly Hills, California.
He was very contrite, Brooks said. He never dreamed in a million years that this little thing that he thought was cute and funny would go worldwide viral.
It’s good to see that some fathers DO care!
First,check their teeth!
Almost sounds like dear ole dad escaped from whatever facility was providing custodial care.
See what their moms look like.
Pretty funny - his father put a picture in the ad, but it wasn’t a recent picture.
Looks like Dad has been watching too much reality TV with his “lady friend.”
This would make a nice ‘feel good’ movie. Ryan Reynolds (Green-Lantern) could play the young store owner. Robert DeNiro could play the elder store owner. Jennifer Lawrence and Melissa McCarthy would have parts too.
I saw them on tv. The son was quite handsome and charming which leads me to believe he enjoys playing the field and not settling down.
You should be a producer.
I think you’re right, but you might draw a chick like the one in the Eagles’ LYIN’ EYES. One who wants double sugar.
See what their bank accounts look like.
“If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life Never make a pretty woman your wife “
I dated a guy whose father would enquire about the health histories of his son’s serious ladies and their families. I wasn’t a serious date, we were better off as friends. But I would have never answered those questions anyway. BTW, both father and son were doctors.
Yo’ wife is UGH-LEEEEEEEEEEE
Yeah, man, but she sho’ can COOK
I went to read the whole story....so I went to the People entry. It is very funny. The father (speaking as the son) says ‘I’m 5’5”, so if you are 5’8” we may have a problem’. He also says ‘if you voted for Obama and are planning on voting for Hillary, you are not for me’. It really is a pretty cute story......the father pretending to be the son looking for a wife. The son says ‘it isn’t easy finding a Jewish woman in Salt Lake City’. And then hugged his dad. A sweet story in the midst of all the disgusting major news stories of today.
Having frequently traveled to Coeur dAlene... That’s not the place you want to be looking. Just saying. There are not so slim slim pickins.
For some reason, the crazy ones are really good in bed. Or so I’m told by the old guys at the pool hall.
LOL. Utah: Where Jews are gentiles.
There may be other reasons why the son, 48, remains a "confirmed bachelor" (at least that's what they used to call it).
