Interior Secretary Sally Jewell told attendees at an event on Hispanic-American entrepreneurship on Tuesday that if it were not for legal and illegal immigration into the United States “we would not eat.”

Jewell said that the country is still trying to address the rights of farm workers, including the role immigration plays.

“I’d say the challenges of immigration reform are a good example,” she said. “If we did not have immigration to this country we would not eat. Whether it’s documented or undocumented, we would not eat,” Jewell said at the United States Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C. …

He was an advocate for a farm worker's union and is the main reason why we have the United Farm Worker's union.

Two of the main parts of immigration reform is reforming the guest worker visas, H2A ag worker visa and H2B non-ag worker visa.

You need to understand the role of the United Farm workers union in reforming the H2A

Unions don't like guest workers and they don't like illegals because both are hard to organize. So the unions want lower quotas on guest workers visas and want higher quotas on legal permanent resident alien visas(green cards) and they want illegals to be amnestied onto the path to citizenship.

The GOP wants higher quotas on guest workers and lower quotas on legal permanent resident aliens(green cards) and they want amnesty to guest worker.

The GOP is in a weak negotiating position with the unions/dems because many republican voters are immigration hawks opposed to higher quotas on both temporary guest worker visas and permanent visas, plus, they are opposed to both amnesty onto the path and amnesty to guest workers.

We used to work the fields during the summers in the SF Bay Area and the migrant laborers worked very long hours, and outworked all of the locals.

The whole family would work piecemeal. The little kids would work full shifts with no breaks and were very disciplined.

That was before Cesar Chavez, who the farmers absolutely detested.

Many times over the years local orchardists have tried to get non migrant farmworkers to harvest. Never works and has resulted in lawsuits when injuries ensued.
