The archivist stumbled across the file in a stack of boxes on the second floor of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem. The yellowing letters inside dated back more than half a century, chronicling the dreams and struggles of a young man in Kenya.
He was ambitious and impetuous, a 22-year-old clerk who could type 75 words a minute and translate English into Swahili. But he had no money for college. So he pounded away on a typewriter in Nairobi, pleading for financial aid from universities and foundations across the Atlantic.
His letters would help change the course of American history.

“Lord loves a working man. Don’t trust Whitey!”
You left off the medical advice.
“His letters would help change the course of American history.”
Uh...no.
History will prove his (alleged) son to be nothing more than the public face of a moment of temporary insanity on the part of the American people.
A generation from now, Barack Obama will be viewed as a curiosity - a pop sensation - who somehow was elected to our nation’s highest office, by a people who were dumbed down and stupefied to near suicidal levels.
If anything, his influence on the course of American history will be quite the reverse of what he intended.
I’ve never bought into the idea that Frank Marshall Davis is Obunghole’s father.
Even Zero probably has no idea who his real daddy is.
“See a doctor and get rid of it.”
He didn’t bother because they weren’t from Frank Marshall.
Plus he couldn’t make it about him
Weird story and weirder reaction to the letters by Obozo. Could it be he doesn’t give a damn because the Kenyan was not his real dad?
I find this subject matter much too painful to read.
“Why is this being released now?”
It’s Fathers Day. The traditional NYT Father’s Day lede of either domestic violence or child support sob stories had to move out of the way for this.
But don’t worry. The Boston Globe led with a transgender dad story, so all is not lost.
Haven’t checked WaPo to see if they picked up the slack.
yup, Barack, sr. was a user who learned early how to exploit the good will of others....
selfish, exploitive, narcissistic..... wow the son took after him without even knowing the man.... maybe it’s in their genes?
I don’t think there is anything weird about Obama, Jr’s disinterest in these letters. He “used” his father when he was useful to his advancement with a dishonest “dreams” book.... there’s nothing useful about this now, only a threat that it could remind ppl we have been had.

Did frank davis “rear” him?
All we know for sure is that she was a mudshark before it became trendy. Where there was one, I am sure there were others. More than likely she wore it as a badge of honor among subversives of her time.
The Kenyan 0bama is not a blood relative of 0bola in the WH. Why should he bother to read them? He has no interest in them.
“We” don’t know the truth? Speak for yourself.
Those who read the research threads on FR for years know the truth.
I really wonder why freepers did not read the incredible research threads ongoing for several years here. Anyone who read them carefully would know that the Kenyan 0bama and Stanley Ann Dunham are not the parents of 0bola in the WH.
People read plenty of threads about miscellany, trivia, movies, etc - why not read the important threads. I don’t get it.
Yes.
Neither FMD nor the Kenyan are related to 0bola.
He knows who his father is.
